Ultra slow file transfer

Not long ago I had some hard drive questions and am now actively transferring files from one computer to another via a Null Modem cable, using the 'XP file and settings transfer Wizard'. All is going to plan except I'm wondering about the projected time 'til completion. Right now, as files are being transferred, the window is saying 4.8% complete (this is overnight) and 171 hours and 1 minute to go. Thats over seven days - is this normal? There were several gigs of files to transfer but never thought it would take this long.

How big is the total amount you are transfering? I believe most null modem cables will get you 15kb/sec on the theoretical high end.

Not exactly sure of the total volume - close to 20 gigs. The Wizard collects it and begins transfer in about thirty minutes and the 'estimated time to completion' seems to continuously vary + or - a few seconds. Perhaps I'm misinterpreting - e.g. 175:30:11 - is the first set (175), hours or minutes?

So assuming you are getting 15KB/s you are looking at nearly 400 hours to transfer the whole amount. If you use an ethernet network (either with a router/switch or a crossover cable) it will be considerably faster.

Limited knowledge led me to the Null Modem Cable/Transfer Wizard method, since it sounded like a piece of cake but I have seven days before it's done. Unfortunately the only ethernet cables we have are like the one connecting our two-machine network. We have a router between the DSL modem and the computers. What else do I need and where does it go?

If both machines are connected to that router then you share the folder and open an explorer window and type \\<computer name> and you should see the it. Just make sure you either disable any software firewalls running (like windows firewall) when you try to connect or create a rule to allow file sharing.

Took the easy way out and ran to Staples for a crossover cable. Ran the file transfer Wizard with it and it's transferring like gangbusters as we speak. Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction - some of us need more help than others.
