Ultra X2 PSU

Well I figured it out. If your motherboard has a specific port for system fan and your CPU fan then if no fan is plugged into the system fan (PSU fan) then the computer will not boot. If your mobo does this then you will need to plug in a fan to the system fans port, a fan which has a sensor. The ULTRA X2 is self powered so no 3 pin connector is available. I had to take the fan out of my old power supply and plug it into the system fan port JUST to use my new ULTRA X2 power supply. I figured I would save some of you a headache and share this information with you.

BTW, very nice PSU.

  1. The system fan is not the PSU fan, it is a case fan.
  2. The computer will boot just fine, unless you have some crazily screwed up thing

I have never heard of a motherboard that does that, nor have I ever had a PSU that has its fan connect to the motherboard.

Any mobo with protection on it will let you know that you have no system fan and in my case that happend to be my PSU's fan. If no fan with a sensor is in that 3pin port then I will get an error message telling me there is no system fan and the PC will shut down. It wasn't really up for discussion, this is just what happend.

In all my experience with computers, I have never had a machine shut down because it didn't have a system fan. All I am saying is that I have never heard of this ever happening.

I havn't either, I was dumbfounded when it came up. Even tried to bypass it in the BIOS, nothing. It's kind of odd if you ask me, but I also have never worked with a PSU that wasn't using a 3 pin for its 120mm fan so I contacted ULTRA's tech support and they told me I need a sensored fan in that port, so I took the fan out of my old Antec :-)

I have heard of them shutdown because of CPU fan, but not a case fan.
Dude, there is no PSU that plugs into your motherboard for its' fan. PERIOD.

There are a few old motherboards that have PSU fan connectors, but I have never seen a PSU for them.

So the PSU fan would plug into the mobo? That doesnt make a lick of sense.

My old 350W Antec had a 3 pin for its fan, and the stock PSU for this ancient thing. You gotta understand it's all I have had for PSUs so it's all I know. I just figured all of them had 3 pin connectors...
