Um, why is my wireless N router only displaying G signal?

I would of never known this if it wasn't for me picking up an Xbox 360 the other day. The new 360 models have an wireless N chip built in, and when I went to set up my Media Center connection between my PC an the 360 it popped up with a message on the 360 saying that I'm running G, so my internet connection might have problems so enable N if my router supports it [I don't know exactly how it was worded but yeah]. So I go to re-setup the internet connection an sure enough, it shows under Wireless Mode: 802.11g.

What's going on?
 
What router is it (Model) , what ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Does your router support wireless N? You weren't very clear :)
 
Totally forgot to give the model name, lol. It's a Netgear WNR3500, so a very good router. Time Warner's Road Runner TURBO is my ISP/plan - and given the name of the router, yes it supports N. Under the Wireless Settings I have the mode selected for 'up to 300mbs' as well.
 
Maybe you have a faulty "N" chip in your 360. Turn the router, Xbox and PC on and off, see if it makes any difference, if not, contact the manufacturers of the product :)
 
That would suck, as these are brand new 360's - an I had to wait a month for them to get manufactured an shipped out, finally. On the phone with Netgear right now I guess. I have an iPhone that supports wireless N, same with an HP printer - any way to find out if it's connected through N or G with those?
 
On the iPhone (4 is the only one that supports wireless "N" standard), in settings there should be a little box saying "wi-fi", tap that and it should say whether you are connected, what to, signal strength, and signal type. Then we can determine whether it's just your 360 or if it's your router
 
Alright well I got it figured out for now. Before calling up Netgear I tried switching the channel, from channel 1 to channel 7 - the settings applied and it was still connecting in G. So I called, an all we did was add a number 1 to the end of my router name, change the security option from WPA-PSK [TKIP] to WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] and changed the channel back to 7 and it worked. Does this sound right?
 
On the iPhone, it just shows the router name and then a full 3 bars for strength - doesn't show what signal type it is, though. Clicking into the blue arrow brings me to IP address stuff, but still no signs of signal type.
 
Ah. Do you own a laptop? Double-click on the signal bar in the bottom right (default)
And go to >Open network and sharing center>Connections>

It should say your router, and how fast it's signal is: on mine it says
Speed:54Mbps
So basically I've got a "G" router.
 
I don't, unfortunately. Do you think the original security option I had set blocked wireless N for some reason? And in order to enable wireless N it has to be set up as WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] ?

It won't say what type, or I have never seen it.

Your first point, maybe, but wireless "N" routers [and most other routers, for that matter], can be setup with either WEP or WPA security. It shouldn't affect the radio type :confused: Do you run your computer off Ethernet? sounds like it
:( if you run wi-fi, however, you can still do the steps above ^^^ Maybe your PC only supports wireless G?
 
My PC shouldn't have anything to do with the wi-fi connection though, I wouldn't think. And yeah my PC is hardwired, same with another computer in another room, and my PS3 - my iPhone/printer/360 are all ran off of wi-fi. I don't understand how changing that security option fixed the problem, at all, because the 360 is now displaying N.

Wow. Maybe it was just some malfunction :P
