problem is I type out chkdsk utility and run it and all it does is open dos and close real fast. I'm not sure how to get such programs open.

When you type chkdsk /f at the Run prompt a brief dos type window will appear stating that another process(Windows gui) is in use and would you like to schedule the check disk utility to run on the next startup of the system. That's when you answer yes by pressing the Y key then. The image here will show how that looks.

The other method besides manually typing in the coomand is to open the MyComputer or any explprer window in order to right click on the drive's icon. Once the properties screen comes up select the tools tab. The first thing seen is the error checking option with the check now button to have that run the check disk utitlity.

The other method is simply going to Start>Accesories to open the command prompt to type the chkdsk /f command in there. One of the two methods should see results there.
