Unable to View Attachments!!

Help Needed

I have been receiving e-mails with attachments but cannot view them. When I do open them a whole load af scibbly jibirish writing comes up. I have heard I need to download something to be able to view them, but what do I need to download or is there something else I have to do?

I am using Windows Vista.
