Underclock?

I'm just wondering if there's any software that allows one to underclock a processor a good deal where no fans are required?

I have an Athlon 64 4000. It's not too loud, but when I sleep, I'd like it to be quite. Normally, I'd shut it down, but I had something downloading tonight and it just made me think. It would be nice if there was some way to keep it quiet as it downloaded...

BIOS can do that dynamically for you or you can manually set it. Generally, use overclocking methods but drop everything instead of raising it. Clockgen should be able to help you though

well BIOS works (like Praetor said) i think he is wanting something he can do on the desktop without interrupting anything.

If he used the BIOS, he'd have to reboot, set it, then turn on and start the download again. Kind of annoying, but it works.

As for your convenient desktop utility...i'm not really sure of a safe one. I know lots of desktop overclocking software, but even they freeze up your computer sometimes. Downclocking might have the same/worse effect.

But if you don't mind rebooting and doing it then resuming the download...Praetor's answer works the best:) Reverse overclocking! lol

Well this laptop has nothing to underclock :-/ There's got to be SOMETHING out there to keep it down because it does go down to 800MHz quite often. Part of that PowerNow technology
