Unique Problem with HP Desktop

Hello. I have a new HP Desktop and had a very unusal thing happen to me last week. I bought the computer new about 18 months ago and it has been in the box since the day I bought it. I was overseas so I did not get a chance to use it until last week. I took it out and set it up. I plugged it in along with the keyboard and the mouse and the monitor and allowed it to stay plugged in for a short while to make sure that the cmos was charging. I pushed the on button on top of the computer and it started coming up then I heard a loud electrical spark and smelled something burning inside the computer so I tried to shut it off. At the time I saw that windows was loading up on the monitor. The machine would not shut off so I unplugged it.

Since then I can turn the computer on but the power light in the on/off switch will not light up. The computer will not load up and the monitor will not see the computer. I changed out the power supply although I did not think that would be the problem and it was not. I think I have a fried motherboard but I also think it may have something to do with the on off switch. Oh, the DVD player does operate as do all of the other attached components. Even the harddrive tries to spin up to a point then it stops. Some times the fans do come on and sometimes they do not. Does anyone have a clue what the problem is? Thanks.
 
It's hard telling, you may have a bad motherboard. Did you buy this computer overseas and not change the voltage on the power supply to the correct one?

No, I bought it directly from HP and stocked it until I could get a chance to set it up. It was set for 115 on the power supply. And the new power supply did not fix the problem. I would think the motherboard but its that damn switch not lighting up when I turn it on that baffles me. The fans come up the HD spins up and it acts like its going to work than nothing. This board has that Nvidia video processor in it too which is why I bought it. I was thinking that part of the board may have fried but what would cause the loss of the light on the on /off button and why will it not turn off with the on/ off button but it will turn on? Hmmm
 
It sounds like the power supply sparked and killed the motherboard. It may have also damaged the RAM and CPU. Many OEM use very cheap components especially powersupplies that are prone to doing this.

If you still have the receipt/warranty, you should take it back and get it replaced, because it's well and truly dead.
 
I have all of that and its still in the box it came in. HP told me sorry sucker but your warranty ran out 8 months ago and we do not really care if you just now opened the box. You should have checked it when you bought it. I told them I could not because I was out of the country and the sale was on while I was gone. Again, too bad.
 
lodge a complqint. computers should not die after 18 months and certainly not when it has been sitting there the majorty of the time.

I will try but they were pretty clear in their statement. They could careless that the computer is new and had never been turned on. I even told them if they took the system in and got the harddrive they would find that I had never used it because I had not initiated any of the software. I will give your link a chance but I think I am going to take it to computer repair shop. I can trouble shoot just about anything but I do not have the equipment to troubleshoot the motherboard or the cpu. Thanks
 
1. I am very sorry you had this issue, nobody wants there stuff to break after little usage
2. Why would you purchase a computer knowing you were not going to use it for that long, i mean it doesnt matter how good the sale was i cant imagine how much that unit depreciated in value over that time.
3. I agree with HP though they are stuck between a rock and a hard place, how can they know the unit wasn't used and still in the box?
 
I bought it right before I was told that I had to move for a new job. It stayed in the box while I used my laptop. Then the new job took me out of the country for almost 2 years and I just got back. I have 4 laptops, 2 desktops in my house and all can be used at anytime. They are all networked and wireless for the most part. 3 printers, a fax machine and scanners etc. I am an engineer and I do not like working out of an office so my home is my office. So when one of the laptops went down and another was acting up and one of my desktops was in need of upgrades to keep up with the load I opened the box thinking I had backup. Not complaining just facts. I am not upset with HP about the warranty nor do I blame them, I just came here hoping that someone else had an experience like mine so they could point me into the direction of repairs. I see thats not the case so I will turn it over to a tech and see what they find.

Ah, just read this. Come on now. You and I both know that even though processors have gotten a wee bit faster all you are getting when you buy a system nowadays is bells and whistles. There are not that many advances coming out anymore and all they do is change a little here or there to sell a product. With the exception of apple that is.
 
Well I just found out it was the Motherboard and its common with this one, ECS MCP61PM-HM 1.0B Nettle2-GL8E AM2 hp MOTHERBOARD. Seems that HP or ECS used Chinese Capacitars that were prone to pop. Sure indication is that the capacitar is swollen and the top is pooched out like a bad can of food. Of course, HP is denying it but I have found that several forums have mentioned the same problems being found with the same MOBO. So new motherboard and I am on my way. Thanks for the help. Ed
