Hi all,

A post for my girlfriend here. She's recently started university and in her room in her flat she cannot get wifi anywhere but she does have an Ethernet lead that allows her to connect to the Internet obviously. But she has to log in and register the computer's MAC address. The problem is she wants to use her iPod and tablet. But they only work on wireless. Is there any way of being able to use the university's Internet wirelessly. As far as I'm aware someone in another flat has done it but we don't know who.

Also I've already tried bridging the connections and an ad hoc network from the pc but unfortunately no joy.

Also just for reference the computer is an acer aspire netbook running windows 7 home premium.

Any help massively appreciated :)
 
You'll probably want to get a wireless router - that's what I did for my dorm. Technically we're not supposed to have them, but I've hidden the SSID and added a WPA2-Personal key. Mind you' you'll probably also need to set the router as a static IP (register her laptop, then just copy the IP address, etc. and duplicate the PC's MAC address to the router).
 
That sounds a lot simpler than I imagined aha. As for the static ip etc. how would I go about that. Networking isn't really a strong point. Thanks :)

Get the laptop connected to the network, then open a command prompt. Use ipconfig to view the settings you receive, then just input those into the router. For the DNS servers you can just use the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).
 
I know its been a while but i got round to setting it up today and cant seem to get it to work. Below is the router setup page. I have copied the ip address, default gateway and subnet mask directly from ipconfig but i think what may be letting it down is the DHCP thing which i have no idea what i'm doing there. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

You don't need to worry about DHCP since you're making it a static IP. They're two totally different things. You still can't get online with the way you have it set up?

Yes you have it configured correctly. Can you get online through the router?
 
I've just looked on the universities troubleshooting page and I know you said it doesn't matter but it says that for the internet to work the computer must be set up to accept DHCP so I don't know if that changes things as I think that automatically sets the IP?

Also when we first set up the connection when windows connected it came up with a bubble saying that it required additional information which was her uni email and password so I dont know whether these need to be stored into the router and how to do that?

Well my school uses the Cisco NAC clean access agent to log in but I don't have that issue. You can try setting the router up as DHCP but I can't guarantee it will work.
 
I did try using pppoe but still no luck. I think this may be a losing battle. I just have a feeling it's something to do with the fact that the computer has the credentials stored but I don't know how to store them to the router
 
This isn't ideal, but you could always have a computer connected to the ethernet port and leave it running to act as an ad-hoc network, or bridge two wired ethernet ports together and use the second NIC for the router.

How is Aberystwyth uni?

I can see you have a 6to4 tunnel adapter set- you'll most likely need to remove this adaptor as it will probably wan't to try and connect via ipv6.

First and most obvious thing, have you registered the router's MAC address with your university's NAP server? Agreed with others here if there isnt' an option to register other devices then you'll need to clone your mac address from your PC, but worth checking first.

Next is, looks like your settings for your external WAN connection is static- you don't want to be doing this, sounds like the uni is setup for DHCP, so you need to select on your router under its WAN configuration "use DHCP to optain an ip". make sure DHCP is set to enabled for your LAN side as well though.

really by connecting this router- you want to take advantages of its NAT features, meaning the router will connect the wired connection on the wall and obtain an ip given by the uni, it will then use NAT and DHCP to allocate a private ip address to your devices such as your ipad, iphone etc and share your uni's single ip address for internet access.
