unlocked 550

720 @ 3.5ghz vs the 550 @ 3.8

I think the 720 will go higher but comparing these two the 550 would perform a abit better on benchmarks but you will not notice that in real life. The 720 will be right at the heels of the 550 but the 720 will kill it on multi-threading and you'll notice it more. So overall the 720 is better even if it clocks just 300mz lower, your getting an extra core.

Doesn't sound like the OP uses much multithreaded apps. Neither do I, my PC is for gaming and internet, thats about it. In that case, a higher clocked dual core will outperform a tri-core as far as FPS in games. Not to mention, the 550 has a better unlock success rate than the 720.

A trade off for 5 fps vs another core is silly. The odds have gone down with a stable unlock and so has the 955 price so if you want a powerful quad then buy the quad and be done with it.

If he's only using his PC for gaming and internet, whats the point of a third core at all? 5 more FPS may make the difference between lag and no lag.

from the reviews i jsut went through the 550 still seems liek it has more performance boosts in the areas i like to play around in namely crysis and video encoding xD
the rendering isnt quiet as well off in some apps but i really dont care about 3 fps when im getting about 150 every game i play pretty much i limit to 60 fps

though that may jsut be because of the higher clock speed of the 550 does anyone know of a review that runs its tests with the 550 and 720 both overclocked?

Phenom II X3 +1 ...see what the other opinions are ...

550 vs. 720 Blah Blah Blah. No matter what anybody says, all the Phenom II BE models overclock about the same. Right now the 720 is just 17 bucks more then the 550. 17 bucks for a extra core, seems kinda of a no brainer unless your a fanboy of one or the other. Sure more 720 unlocked better when they were first released, but the same thing is happening to the 550. So over all your probably more likely to get a 720 that will unlock then the 550. That is unless AMD went brain dead and decided to sell better cores for 20 cheaper:rolleyes:

You're right, about 800mhz over stock clock. 3.6ghz for the 720, and 3.9 for the 550.

You do know that these 2 statements contradict right?

You can twist what I said to fit your little plan, I don really care. I never said 800mhz. I said all the BE models clock about the same period! The Phenom II 940/955/965/720 and 550 on air will all clock around 3.7-3.9, unless you have a dud chip. I like where you claim the 720 is 3.6 to fit your little theory. All of the 720 I have had would do 3.6 with just 1.375 voltage.

No they dont contradict each other. Or did you happen not to read, I said the same thing is happening to the 550.

You can ramble on if you wish, but this is my last post on this one. Its just going to be a back and forth into nothingness.

im settling on teh 550

and no not banking on being able to unlock

and from waht i was told on here and on reviews even if you unlock the 720 its only equivalent to an 810 if you unlock a 550 its a 955 ...... quit a difference in quads there lol

though yes that 3rd core would be useful for some apps the majority of the programs i run will run better on the 550

Wrong, the 810 only has 4mb. of L3 cache. Runs at 2.6 and is not a BE model. The 550 and 720 has 6mb. of L3 cache. The 720 and 550 are the same other then the 720s have 3 cores.

How is that, they will both overclock the same.

If thats true than how come you are only running 3.5ghz?

Yeah the same thing is happening to the 550, so how is it that the 720 is more likely to unlock? Read...contradiction.

The 720 has three good cores and is binned higher than the 550 from AMD because of that. Thats only one core that you have to risk whether it is bad or not, if the 550 has one good core and one bad core you cant unlock it.

Second, not all chips are going to overclock the same. Stranglehold has one of the first 720 batches iirc, and those dont overclock as well as the newer batches do.

What? It's not binned higher because it has another core. They all started as quads, so they are all binned the same.

Yeah well, I just got done reading the latest couple hundred or so reviews on newegg for the 720, and in 90% of cases the highest overclock on stock voltage was around 3.4ghz, and maxxed out completely about 3.6-3.7ghz.

Well I,m glad you think just because its at 3.5 thats all it will do. I choose 3.5 because it will do it with only 1.375V. I've had it to 4.0 stable with 1.50V on three cores and 3.9 stable with 4 cores at 1.50. But really there is not much performance difference 3.5 and 3.8/9, so I choose to run it with less voltage.

This is what I said.

Sure more 720 unlocked better when they were first released, but the same thing is ( happening to the 550). So over all your probably more likely to get a 720 that will unlock then the 550. That is unless (AMD went brain dead and decided to sell better cores for 20 cheaper)

When either one was first released they used better cores to get better reviews for sales, After the first month your less likley to get one that will unlock. That goes for both, but since they get more money for a 720, the better cores will go to the 720.

Second, not all chips are going to overclock the same. Stranglehold has one of the first 720 batches iirc, and those dont overclock as well as the newer batches do.

Well really its the other way around, the first batches unlocked better and overclocked better. I just choose to run mine at 3.5

I said I wasnt going to post anymore about it, But I cant help it. Newegg reviews:P. Why am I arguing with you is beyond me:D

I just find it funny that most guys on the internet forums think newegg reviews are all people that have no idea what they are doing.....like you know soooo much more than everybody giving reviews on newegg. They are overclocking just like us, maxxing out stock voltages and bumping voltage to see what it maxxes out at. It's not exactly rocket science.
I've found that atleast 90% of reviews, on stuff I've personally purchased, are spot on.

from what ive seen people are only getting the 710 to 3.6-3.7 and everyones gotten the 550 to 3.9
both stable of course

but out of the box the 550 will perform single threaded programs faster as a result of the higher clock speed which i dont run my computer overclocked i do so to see how far i can push it so it would be sitting at 3.1 rather than the 2.8

and then theres the fact that it isnt my money to spend anyways ill be jsut as happy with the 550

as far as unlocking to the 810 820 w/e it was just something i read in a review

i got to every review i find f it from google neoseeker was the last review i read of it if i remember correctly i read every review on newegg and than i move on to professional reviews

Your right if your comparing the 710 to the 550. I would rather have the 550.
