Ive been hearing alot about CPU's that are dual & tri cores that can be unlocked to quad cores. My question is, how would i know which CPU/s can be unlocked? is it certain makes/models or every daul and tri can be unlocked to quad core.can my six core be unlocked to an eight core?all this is soo confusing, why would they make a quad core just to lock it to a daul/tri core?makes no since.Any advice on this subject would be much appericated.

Edit-is it true cores thats unlocked or is it just threads?

To make things simple. With AMD's New line of version 2 processors, they started selling the processors that were meant to be, that failed. (Example, a Athlon ii X3 failed testing, so they disabled the faulty Core(s) to make it stable, and then sell it as a lower processor, which would be the Athlon ii X2.) Certain motherboards have an ACC capability which means with a few clicks, your motherboard unlocks those disabled cores, and turns your processor into what it was mean't to be.

BUT theres a catch. There is no telling if your processor is able to be unlocked or not, its just luck/chance.

I believe the Hex-Core line of processors are only able to unlock more cache if I am correct, you cannot unlock more cores.

Hope this helps. :D

All Phenom I/II X2 and X3 are Quads with cores disabled.

All Athlon II X3 and (some) X2 are quads with disabled cores.

Some Athlon II X2 are true dual cores.

No, the Tuban is a true 6 core, no cores or cache to be unlocked.
