unlocking four cores fail

well i decided i would see if my phenomII 550 was capable of unlocking the two extra cores, so i tried and failed no luck there, it couldn't get past the windows 7 loading screen.

however now i have set everything back to normal and not long after logging in my computer will freeze. can't do anything, no mouse no keyboard nothing. completely frozen.
it does seem to be ok when i am in safe mode though (thats what i'm using now)

so what i'm asking, is it freezing because i tried unlocking the other cores? i read everywhere that it won't damage your cpu it will just void the warranty.

i have double checked to make sure that acc is off so thats not going to be the issue.

thanks!

well... if the two cores got past the bios and started loading the OS, it might be that you needed to redo some other settings, or voltages. try resetting your bios

seems to be going fine now! i feel stupid for not trying that before coming here haha.

regardless of how stupid i look thanks for the help!

i'll be back if it begins to freeze again!

Have you pushed up the voltages when you "unlocked"? Sometimes, you might need to do that to stabilize it.

i'm going to try that now, bomberboy ecxplained that to me in another thread

will i need an aftermarket cooler to be able to run the four cores safely? (if it works that is)

When you tried did you put ACC to Hybrid and set the cores to All or Auto? What voltage is it running at default?

the cores to auto and the acc thing to hybrid i watched a youtube video with a guy who had the exact same motherboard and processor.

i'm not 100% sure what the default voltage is but i think i might be something like 1.3V or something. i am going to try unlocking with a small voltage bump now.

thanks for the help

well i tried and still no luck,
the normal cpu core is 1.35v and i bumped it up to 1.375 and then 1.4 but still no luck. :(
oh well
apparently i should try upping the voltages on the "vcpu-nb" but would it even be worth it?

I would say it has a bad core. Have you got the lastest bios with the Core control option. Pretty sure you can enable what ever cores you want. Might just have one bad core and you could make it a X3.

Depends if you have the Rev. 1.0 or 1.1 of the board.

Rev. 1.0 has yellow Sata ports, Rev. 1.1 has blue ones.

But it need bios F5 on either board.

Dont like suggesting updating a bios to someone that never has, so its up to you. I've used @bios on many Gigabyte boards and never had a problem. Just down load the bios, unpack it in a folder, run @bios, direct it to update from file, pick the folder you saved it in.

ok well i have a rev 1.0 board.
so @bios is a program that i use to update the bios?
so what i need to do:
1.download @bios and install
2. download the new bios (bios f5)?
3. extract the new bios into a folder.
4.run @bios, tell it to update from file.
5. select the new bios i downloaded.

is that basicly it? and is there much of a risk?

thanks soooo much for your help!

sweet thanks soo much!
is there anything i should know before i do it? such as don't have any programs running while updating the bios?

well stranglehold turns out your a legend!

followed what you said and now i'm running an X3, turns out the fourth core was defective.

hehe my processor is being recognised as two different things in cpuz.
an athlon X3 and phenomII x4 hehe

now i just have to stress test and probably buy some aftermarket cooling! :)

thanks!

***edit***
turns out i'm gonna need to buy some aftermarket cooling for me
any recomendations? i am sort of after something cheap though, like a coolermaster tx3 or something (i will add another fan to the tx3)

also i'm from australia so if that helps or anything

Yeah, my 720 is called a Phenom II X4 20 after its unlocked. After you unlock them you lose the temp. reading on each core, but the motherboard temp sensor still will work fine.

If you can find it there for a good price the ZeroTherm Zen FZ120, but its a tall cooler so make sure your case is wide enough.

Other then that for a good price, the C/M TX3 or the A/C Freezer 64 pro.

thanks a lot, i've never seen freezer pro in any stores in australia, i'll have look at the zerotherm

my case deminsions are (W)189 x (H)425 x (L)485 mm will the zerotherm fit?

Whoa, whoa, whoa, wtf? How do you "unlock" another core on a CPU? I've never even heard of this being done before, can someone explain?
