unlocking four cores fail

i'll have look at the zerotherm

my case deminsions are (W)189mm will the zerotherm fit?

My case is 8.6 inches and it just clears a side fan. 189mm. is something like 7.44 inches. If you dont have a side fan or if the fan is in the lower half of the side panel it (might) fit.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, wtf? How do you "unlock" another core on a CPU? I've never even heard of this being done before, can someone explain?

Dont tell me you have never heard of unlocking Phenom cores?

dont worry about jumping the vcore, 1.34-1.35 is the stock voltage for the phenom II x4's. so if its already at that voltage, you wont need to raise it if you unlock. well, at least you shouldnt need to raise it.

haha i feel honoured that i know something that someone else on this forum didn't know! :P that doesn't happen often! :D

not to dis you or anything :P

i've got a side fan so it probably won't fit :(

so whats your opinion on this tx3, would it get the job done?
or should i get this? ZALMAN CNPS9300 AT CPU Cooler
http://store.9289.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=77_114&products_id=2877
i think that will fit.. well i hope it will haha

or this ZALMAN CNPS7500-AlCu LED CPU Cooler
http://store.9289.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=77_114&products_id=2872

or stay with the cooler master tx3 (which i will buy another fan for)
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=207_23_312&products_id=11895

i will buy this fan to go with it
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=9_509&products_id=2429

and then if i do buy the tx3 i'll get it from pccasegear.com.au because then i can buy some shin etsu to go with it :)

so what should i do the cooler master will probablly end up costing me about $60-70 so if those cheaper zalmans will do the job i will get them.

cheers

For the price the TX3, I would hold off on the extra fan. It will cool it just fine on its own. Unless your going for some extreme overclocking.

well what i meant when i told him to raise the voltage, was that one core might have had a very low optimum clock speed, so it would need more voltage than normal to run at the same speed as the other cores. a single core that didn't speed bin well would be turned into a dual or tri-core by AMD.

On AMD CPUs, they sometimes lock off cores. The CPUs that they make are all quad core, however some chips fall below AMD standards. Usually that "bad" chip only is slightly warmer when running, isn't quite as efficient, maybe isn't quite as fast, things which aren't detremental to the core, but are below AMDs standards basically. If you get one like that, you can unlock the locked cores and they will work fine. Ofcourse some will be too far gone and cause hanging, bsods, stop the system from posting etc.

they also lock of cores for demand.

Say they made 1000 CPUs, that is 1000 quad cores. If from that 200 ordered are dual core, 300 tri and 500 quad, they will shut off the perfectly good cores for the dual and tri core CPUs, so you can unlock it and get the exact equivalent to the quad core equivalent.

However you also need a motherboard that has ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration) so you can unlock the cores through the bios. Can't remember the exact south bridge that you need (if strangehold comes back here, he will probably tell you), but it is certain SBs that have it

i think the one i have is either 750 or 710.

the tx3 will fit won't it? its 90 x 51 x 139 mm and my case is (W)189 x (H)425 x (L)485 mm

on newegg the ZALMAN CNPS7500-AlCu LED CPU Cooler has better reviews. (well more five star percentage)

i will take your word for it though :D just wanna make sure it will fit, i'm pretty sure it will but i don't know all too much haha.

cheers

so long as you have a mid ATX case, it should fit fine.

And newegg reviews mean nothing. If the TX3 was the worlds greatest cooler that ran better than sticking ice cubes made by god on there, if it was just a little too difficult to fit, or was slightly bigger than a few others or petty crap like that, people would give it less than 5 stars, even though that bit of extra work or that little less room means amazing temperatures, which is all that matters for a cooler at the end of the day

sahweet!
although some guy said it only barely fit in his case, and his case is 200mm thick! mines only 189mm and i have a side fan aswell, that will get in the way.
sorry to be a nuisance! just wanna makes sure though!
i will open my case and have a look and have a shot at doing some measurements with a cracked bendy ruler! :D

thanks for your patience

I have the TX2 and I'm not certain on the size difference (cba using google right now, going to bed in a few minutes :P) but that fit in my case with about an inch to spare from the side and my case is just over 22cm wide, from the CPU socket to the side panel I would say is about 18cm or so, so it may be a bit of a tight fit, but nothing that a dremmel with the right attatchments and some cable ties won't sort out :)

well turns out it won't fit :(

taking into account the 2.5cm side fan its not going to fit, and then even without the side fan it will be an incredibly tight fit. :(

any suggestions on another heatsink?

Need a Southbridge of 710 or above.

Your case is 7.44 inches and the cooler is 5.47 inches. Have two inches more or less to spare. But the 7.44 is side panel to side panel. Average fan is what, 25mm./one inch. If its over a inch from the back panel to the top of the motherboard CPU bracket it wont fit.

Could go with something like the Zalman CNPS8700/ Scythe SCSK 1100/ Xigmatek HDT-D128

the only thing that says it supports AM3 is the zalman, the others say AM2.
Do AM2 and AM3 have the same clips? so AM2 heatsinks will fit on an AM3 mother board?

and out of those three, which would be your favourite?

As far as coolers the AM2/+/AM3 CPU brackets are all the same.

Oh cool thanks!
i'm tossing up between the zalman and the xigmatec, with the xigmatec costing me $15 less inlcuding shipping.

thanks for all your help!
