I tried to write some music to a cd in my Lite-on writer. Windows XP Home service pack3.5 My computer tells me it cannot find the drive. I can insert a music disc and play music but I can't rip music to a blank cd. Possibly answering my own question but time for a new dvd writer?? Cd's seem to be reasonable quality.

The computer is a "Leading Edge" and you have probably never heard of that either. It had been in storage for 5 years, I purchased it 4 days ago, set it up and hooked it to my internet. Windows XP automatically went to the Microsoft website and downloaded hundreds of MBs of update files including SP1, SP2, SP3 and a file called SP3.5. While it was doing that, it also downloaded a stack more files related to Microsoft Office 2003. Apparently, both Win XP and Microsoft Office are now up to date. Back to your question. I think the program was either Nero or the writing program built into XP SP?? Doesnt matter now, thanks, I am buying a new writer with Nero 10

3.5 is probably referring to Microsoft NetFramework software. Most likely the drive is just faulty as its a few years old. The eye/laser it uses burn/read the cd's is probably bad.

johnb35, thanks for that. I think you are correct about 3.5 referring to .Net Framework. The computer was bought in 2006, the writer has a build date of 2005. I was thinking that it might have been ok as it was only used for 6 months then packed away. The batteries were left in the wireless mouse and of course they leaked. 5 years of storage will do that. Dead mouse and keyboard on top of the dead writer. Ah well, I did buy it "as is". The best part of the deal was that mobo and hard drive are SATA. very useable.
