Unusual game choppiness

I am having trouble running Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on my pc - all other games run super smooth (COD4, HL2, Bioshock, etc). It seems like it's a framerate problem but my computer should have no problems even at max settings. I was wondering if anyone else has had any issues with this game in Vista or in general.
 
i've played it a while ago on my notebook (far worse specs than your desktop)
could run it perfectly at high...
update the game? update drivers?
