update operating system

My employer gave away computers when they got new ones. I wanted to give one to my grandson. I went to make sure all was good before I gave it to him. It works just fine, until you try to get onto the INTERNET. After speaking with my INTERNET provider I was told the operating system was too old. I do not understand why I can not get access to the INTERNET when my employer was on line. I am getting very frustrated with this. Below are are specs.

Dell Model DHM
Intel [R] Celeron
CPU 2.00 GHz
AT/AT Compatible
256 Ram

Operating System is
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
5.00.2195 Service Pack 3

I hope this is enough info, I appreciate any help.

Yeah they just wont support it, you could get online with a 95 box if you had one.
Make sure your network card doesn't have a static IP.

also when you get it on the internet install windows updates... sp4.

do not know what a 95 box is...do not understand a lot of this computer language so please bare with me here.

My current set up for the internet is dsl via a wireless router. When I could not start up this old work computer with the router, I undid the router and tried to connect directly from the dsl box, with no luck. I called my provider and they said the operating system would not work due to the age of the operating system. I know I am doing or not doing something simple but can not understand what.:(

Open internet explorer, click on tools, then on internet options. Click on the connection tab, Make sure that "do not dial a connection" is checked. Then click on the lan settings box, make sure that "automatically detect settings" is checked.

Are you sure that the network driver is installed?

While you are in there make sure proxy is unchecked.

and 95 box = a Windows 95 computer... I'm just saying your computer will work.

and to see if the network driver is installed like john said right click my computer --> properties --> device manager --> look to see if there are any red X's or yellow !'s and make sure you see something in there for network adapter.
