Update or Buy New Laptop

My mom has an old windows XP HP laptop. For it's time it was top of the line, but as you know windows XP is an old OS and support has ended for it. That I know of the laptop has about a 1 gigahertz processor, 1 GB of RAM and 100 GB hard drive space so I think it will be able to update to windows 8.1 but it won't have all the features like a new computer would. So I'm wondering should my mom get a new laptop or should I update her old one for her.

The minimum system requirements for Windows 8.1 are:

1GHz Processor
1GB RAM
16GB of Hard Drive Space

So technically, yes you could install it, but ideally you would have at least 4GB of RAM and a processor in the mid-2GHz range. I would recommend buying a new computer, especially since there's a good chance a laptop that old has a very poor performing battery, low resolution screen, etc.

Thank you. Yes the computer only meets the minimum requirements and the battery isn't very good and neither is the resolution. I'll discuss with my mom if she really wants a new laptop or not. She hardly uses her current laptop or windows 7 desktop computer. She really prefers to use her iPad but unfortunately it only holds 16 GB which she sometimes complains about.

No question, new laptop.

You can even pick up cheap celeron ones that will blow that one out of the water for around $250.

By the time you are done screwing around with the old platform you'll still have a limited, crappily running PC.
