right now i have an asus p5k-e wifi with bios version 1.06.69. i basically bought the board when it was brand new. im trying to figure out if it will recognize a 45nm quadcore or if i will have to update the bios (which im really hesitant about doing) ..... i cant find a concrete answer anywhere. any ideas?

The BIOS version you posted doesn't match the list of BIOS' for that board (couldn't find any at least). Here's the list of CPUs' supported with the corresponding BIOS version. Also, double check and make sure you posted the correct BIOS version.
Naw, don't sweat it. It's hella easy. You can do it within Windows. Look through that first link I provided you. You may even have the EZ Flash software already installed.

i'm now thinking of going with a Q6600 instead of a Q9400. my main reason is the board was released being compatible with the Q6600, so no BIOS updates required.... and it costs $100 less. the specs are practically the same with the exception of being 45nm, slightly higher clock speed and a 1333 FSB.... the latter two of which i could easily beat out by overclocking. my case overall has great cooling so a 65nm chip running slighly hotter doesn't worry me much. what would you do if it was your pc?

Get the E8500. You can OC that bitch up to 4GHz with no sweat and it's the same price as the Q6600. When gaming, you won't benefit from the larger L2 cache of the quad, so don't factor that into the equation. If you're looking to future proof, then there is a bit of an argument for the quad, so, if that's your main goal, then the Q6600 would be okay.

why not add 2 cores if its the same price.. god knows a 2.4ghz core 2 will handle games easily.. plus the Q6600 is overclockable anyways
and actually, the cache does matter... not a LOT but you get more performance per clock.. i know it performs quite a bit better than my e6300, but of course mine has 1/3 the cache of the e8500 and 1/4 the cache of the Q6600.

That, and the fact he doesn't want to flash his BIOS. Forgot about that in my previous post. Yeah, the Q6600 will suit you well, but I still think the E8500 is the better chip...for gaming.

well i just flashed my BIOS. i was expecting issues, crashes, instability, etc. all i did was downloaded the latest version of my BIOS from asus, put it on a flash drive, hit alt + f2 during post, selected the file name, and hit enter. thats it. booted right up.
how the hell do people have trouble doing this? i was made to believe it is like teaching a hippo to do a backflip, when in reality it was probably the most gratifyingly simple thing i have ever done on a PC. i almost want to do it again just for the satisfaction

lol. I know, right? I have no idea why. I mean, you can brick your board with a bad BIOS flash, but I doubt it happens that often. I've flashed every board I've owned at least one time without incident.
