Updating MS Office questions

I have Office 2000 installed on my computer so for security reasons I need to either get the newest Office version or another office program. Some suggested LbreOffice so I downloaded it. I created a word processing document, but it opens very slowly. If LibreOffice is this slow normally then I will just buy the current version of MS Office or Word.

Out of all the Office programs I only use Word, but the price of Office Home and Student is about the same as Word alone, so should I buy Home and Student in case I need some of the other Office programs in the future? Thanks for any replies.
 
Have you tried Open Office? What are your system specs? You may have a slow processor or not enough system memory.
 
I have not tried Open Office. These are my computer's specs:

CPU: Intel Celeron Dual Core E1200, 1.6 GHz, 512K, 800 MHz, OEM, Advanced

Performance Series, Allendale, socket 775
PSU: Power Up 450 Watt ATX
HD: WD Caviar SE, 320G, IDE
MS Office 2000

If I do end up using another word processing program how will all of my old Word files convert to the new program?
 
You have a low end processor. Have you done any general system maintenance lately? Open office will open any microsoft word document.
 
I would try Open Office like suggested. It really depends on what (opens very slowly) means to you. You do have a Celeron Dual Core E1200. But the LibreOffice just requires a Pen III or a Athlon. But you still have to keep in respective your processor and whats really very slow.
 
i still run office 2000 premium and havent had any issues.the only thing it wont do is read docx files.this is easy to fix by downloading the office 2007 compatibility pack and installing it you will get several windows security updates for office 2007.just install them like normal.
 
If you can just download a compatibility pack that has all necessary security updates then why would practically everyone say that using older versions of MS Office is a security risk?
 
to be truthful i dont really know.what i do know is that i havent had a moments problem with the program in the five years since its support has been dropped.i do have pretty good realtime malware and av scanners but they havent picked a thing up either.all i do know is with the compatibility pack,which incidentally is for office 2007 but works for 2000,ive received security updates.i suppose,to be sure,one would have to do some research,just not me.all ive done is relate my experience.in the long run its up to you.
