Updating OS

Have a question on upgrading os on the PC my son usually uses to win7 from vista.

If I buy win7 upgrade, and then later on want to wipe the hard drive to remove some buggyness and competing software and start fresh, do I need to re-install the outdated vista then win7 or can I use the upgrade disk to rinstall the OS?

Thanks,
Kevin

There is a registry workaround that will allow you to activate it from an upgrade disk, but I think it violates the agreement. You'll have to reinstall vista and do the upgrade.

You can install the upgrade without using the key, makes it a trial. Then after the install, stick the the 7 disk back in and this time pick upgrade and use the key. After the install delete the windows old folder.

Thanks.

What do you mean by "windows old folder"? where would that be found and would it say "windows old folder" or would it say something else?

Right, like johnb35 said. Its windows.old. You can do it with the Disk Cleanup. Just check cleanup system files/ok/Previous Windows installations.
