Upgrade 5400 to 6400+

yes they are...I am scared of flashing the bios...don't think i have ever done it without a floppy.
But found the exe on the ecs website and one on gateways website...prob go with ecs this time.
 
That would be a preferred Winflash type updater there. You simply run that while booted in Windows rather then fussing with a boot floppy especially if you don't have one to begin with.

The older dos methods require making sure the updated bios version is already copied to the root of the OS drive as well as on the boot floppy. Once the tool is started up you usually typed in the "ren" command for rename followed by first the present version leaving a space for the name/number of the update.

I see you went a 300 seeing twin 120s in front as well as the 900. The 300 offers the option for a side cover fan while one was added on the 900 here. For anyone not familiar with the 300 that can be seen at http://www.antec.com/usa/productDetails.php?lan=us&id=15300#
 
WINFLASH - CPU upgrade

Supposed to change out the Processor today my old one is actually a 5000
to a 6400 My mobo is MCP61-P AM2 The Bios is Phoenix 6.0 3/14/07
Currently I am running Windows XP 32bit

Question: Will the system boot with the new processor?

If not, do I need to flash it prior to shutting down before installing.

The model board sees "Support for AMD AM2 socket 2000 MT/s processor" listed in the specifications. Apparently that will run Socket 939 models as well as AM2 from the description seen along with the photo of the cpu socket. http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Shared/4006157R/4006157Rmvr6.shtml

You decided to go with the 125w 6400+ over an 89w 6000+ I see. Hopefully you can fit a good 3rd party cooler in tthe Gateway. But never the less it should boot while you might have to go for an AMD patch as well as seeing if the board has the AMD "Cool'n'Quiet" feature.

Thanks so much...ups will be here in anytime now...yeah i got a nice cooler in town on sale, Zalman 9700 Not really planning on overclocking it well maybe a lil, but did grab a few intake fans for front and side for the video card

Hopefully that will fit into the case you have there. It has a fan controller you have to stick on the outside of the case as a further note to mention on it. That switches it from normal to maximum being a two position type knob.

Make sure you get a good thermal paste as well. Many are going for MX2 over Artic Silver 5 while both are good. Just don't apply too much. The photo here shows how much is applied to an AMD heat shield on an older model cpu to get an idea.
