Upgrade: CPU or a GPU?

Hi all,

First time I've opened a thread here :) Anyway, here is the question:

My system is getting a bit old, and I've noticed that some games are getting a bit slower. Like Race WTCC 2007, at the start it becomes a bit laggy, but ones we have started properly, it goes well :)

That's not the only game where it laggs. I see, I notice, I feel that the lagg is coming closer and closer. During this year, new games will be released such as NFS Pro street, etc... and I don't think my system can handle it, not at max that's for sure. But the question is, which part can't handle it? This is my system:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (single core) @ 2.5GHZ
2GB RAM - Latency overclocked
400GB SATAII 16MB
6800GT - A bit overclocked

Those are about the most important things you guys have to know. I have money just for one part. Sux right? That's why I had to make a thread...Because I am middle of a dilemma. I need you guys help.

AMD Athlon X2 5000+ (or more, not definitive yet) or a Sapphire ATI X1950 PRO 256MB? Or something in the same price range. Am really not looking for DX10 cards, not really interested... And please don't show me 'newegg' (or what ever) links, because I live in Belgium.

Would It be useful, if I bought a Dual core? But what's the purpose of a dual-core, you just can ran more tasks at ones. Or better yet, it's just easier for the CPU to run more tasks at the same time. That's it. I think my CPU is well enough to take a game like NFS Pro street. Don't you think?

Anyway, I would like to have some good advice from you guys, which I expect from you :)

Thanks for reading this, I hope you guys can help me out of this.

Slower in Games or in Apps?

I am planning around €135. If I get lucky, I can sell my CPU and my GPU, then I will be able to buy both components.

So... you don't think it's real wise to buy the GPU and leave the CPU behind? The CPU is quit oke though..

There ain't much difference between a 6800GT and a 7600GT.

There isn't.

Hmm. Well I vote GPU, first. As you said, you may be able to sell your old CPU/GPU to fund a new proc, and while the previous poster (intelcrazy) is correct about your CPU becoming a bottleneck, it isn't going to happen overnight, it will take months.

So get a new GPU IMO, for only $105 i suggest the 8600gts. It's faster than the PRO,

Alternatively you can attempt to save some more and hit up a 8800,

Though this would set you back on a new CPU, I think it would be worth it.

The 8600GTS is around €60 more expensive then the ATI. Would it be worth it? Isn't it better to keep the €60 and add some cash and buy a CPU? Because, I am really short on money. It's hard I know... First I need to sell them.

Oh no, of course not. if the PRO is only $50 then it's quite a good deal. So you're looking to spend $135 all together, I understand.

Still though, I stick to my original statement. Buy the GPU now, enjoy the extra performance in games, and worry about that new CPU when you have the money.

Edit: Do you have to sell the CPU/GPU to get the money you need? If so then what is the socket of your motherboard? Can't do without a CPU. ;)

No you misunderstood me :) Or maybe my English sucked...

The 8600GTS is €60 MORE then the PRO. But I'll see.. just need to sell a few things, then I'll buy them both :)
