upgrade cpu

hi i want to upgrade my pcs cpu from a amd 4000+ socket 939 and i have seen a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ for £70, i would like some opinions on whether it is worth doing also my old cpu would go in my daughters pc to replace her amd 3000+ which has the stock fan would i need to replace that fan or would it be ok.

I suspect you might want to consider replacing the stock hsf on both there when going with a faster model for your own system. There are lower cost 3rd party coolers adequate for a basic stock system that will work if there's adequate air flow. For your own case that will depend on what type of programs and games you run as for the system's primary role.

Simply buying a second faster model for the two cases and having the 4000+ as a spare in case you oc or one simply cooks never hurts for the extra cost. The 4000+ would boost your daughter's pc easily enough. The current 4000+ you are running is a 2.4ghz model with the 4200+ X2 being a slower 2.2ghz dual core cpu.

You lose cpu clock speed for multitasking by that swapout. The FX-60 was the speedy FX model until discontinued recently for a dual core model that being the fastest for 939 boards. The FX-55s and FX-57s are single core models with either the 2.6 or 2.8ghz clock speed seen on those.

For the stock sink already in use however for the 3000+ you may have to replace the thermal pad depending on actual wear. Buying a new model retail would provide a 939 stock hsf for replacement if needed. For an OEM buy on a new cpu better think 3rd party.

thanks pc eye my pc has a zalman heatsink so i will be ok but i will get a better heatsink for my daughter, i am still confused about weather i would see an improvement by replacing my cpu with the one i have seen, the reason i picked that cpu is because i always buy my pc parts from the same place and that is the best socket 939 cpu they have.

That kind of limits your options since the drop in cpu speed may or may not be noticable depending on your general use there. The 4000+ will certainly boost the second system leaving the 3000+ in the dust somewhat. It seems funny that a .2ghz difference will sometimes be more noticable then going from a 1.8 to a 2.2ghz model. But once a second core takes up the slack of a large load you may see programs run smoother and seemingly faster.

i use my pc for mainly games and videos i dont have any problems with it ,from booting up its on the desktop in around 30 sec i just thought that a duel core cpu would be better and with them being faded out on my socket i should get one soon and for £70 pound i think its cheap my 4000+ cost me £249 a year ago but obviousely i dont want to make the pc slower now im not sure weather to leave it alone and get a better cpu for my daughters instead.

For handling things running in the background you can readily see the dual core models having their role in regards to multitasking. The FX line is mainly the single core lineup of performance models for 939 boards with the FX-60 being the one dual core there. Here I'm jumping from a 2.2ghz single core 3500+ upto a newer 3ghz dual core model on a board running DDR2 800 to see what boost I can get there as well as going with a dual core for tasks.

Moving up from the 3000+ won't hurt any on the other build. That would see a benefit from simply having a faster cpu to work with. For videos and other multimedia that tax cpus and memory a dual core would have a tendency to smooth things out without seeing a gain in gaming performance especially with a slightly slower model.

The 4200+ was the one seen in the sticky for it's ocing capability for a dual core model while some favor the 4600+ X2. For a stock build it simply works for multitasking. The one thought here was why fix what isn't broke? You could put that towards the eventual upgrade seen in a new build later. The 939s have seen drops here as well since the newer boards(AM3) are due out and 939 will soon faill into the same catagory as the 754s are now already in. In computer terms Socket As are ancient history these days!

AM2+ are coming out, the AM3 wont be out till mid to late 2008.

Eventually everyhing comes out if you have time to wait for them. The thought there apparently has simply to do with a quick upgrade of both cases with a faster cpu for each. Unfortunately the FX-60 that would give one case a boost and being a dual core model is no longer seen. The 4200+ is a good ocer while a faster X2 model for stock to match the 4000+'s speed would be the item.
