Upgrade Dell Dimension 8250

Hi,

I want to upgrade my Dell Dimension 8250 http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8250/specs.htm#1084976 into a sort of gaming computer to mostly play BF:BC2.

I want to upgrade the video card from a GeForce MX 420 http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce4mx.html to a Geforce GTS 250 http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gts_250_us.html.

I also want to upgrade the processor from an Intel Pentium 4 to an Intel Core 2 Duo http://www.google.com/products/catalog?client=safari&rls=en&q=intel+core+2+duo&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=10570003713689710768&ei=9UaQS6HAE5O0Nvb0yOEO&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CBUQ8wIwAg#ps-sellers.

I'm wondering what other costs or products this may entail, and if anybody has any experience upgrading this computer that they can share. This is my first time doing anything like this so any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Seriously??? You would need to build a new computer. That computer has old Rdram and is very expensive, if you can even find any. You would have to upgrade the motherboard to even put a different processor in it. New ram would be required. So your best bet is to just a build a new computer. Sorry to tell you that.

Your motherboard is too old to support that video card and processor. The video card card upgrade is ok but even the cpu upgrade is several years old. Many people around here, including me, still run the Core 2 Duo/Core 2 Quad setups but upgrades your doing just now should make these processors the absolute minimum. Whichever you choose a new motherboard and memory are required and probably a new power supply too.

Like John said, just build a new computer. You can use a couple of the components from the old system so you wont have to buy all new stuff.

Thanks for the advice.

So, if I were to build a new computer, which components would I be able to reuse?

Would I just have to buy a new motherboard and case?

You would need motherboard, processor, memory, hard drive, video card, case and power supply.. Should be able to use the old cdrom drives.

You wouldn't want to. Newer hard drives will be MUCH faster than that older one. Reusing it would slow the whole system down. A new one will have more life left in it, too.
