Hi (first post) –
I have an old emachine which has been a loyal companion for almost a decade. I use 2 80GB HDs (duplicates) as back up. The computer now occasionally freezes so it is time to change the basic game plan.
It is my understanding that many programs, e.g., Adobe Photoshop 6.0, Media Face, Visio, etc. can not be used on newer systems. From this forum, I note that the following configuration is a minimum for an upgrade to XP:
233MHz Pentium 2 (700MHz Pentium 3 or greater for optimal)
64MB of RAM (256MB or more for optimal)
4GB of HDD (20GB or more for optimal)
a CD ROM drive to install XP on -- and most importantly, a valid copy of XP with the COA.
I don’t use the computer for games or to view videos. Aside from basic internet access, it is used to support a couple of sites.
The question is whether to buy components and build a system or to buy a new or used system. (At best, I am just an applications programmer.)
Also, will XP allow use of the older programs?
Many thanks, Akilo55

Zatharus -- Thank you for your comments.
I would like to spend about $600 or so on this. If I buy a used machine -- what would you recommend? Also, where would I look for it (eBay)? How do I tell if I get the XP software that it can be installed?
Best regards, Akilo55 (Frank)
