I'm upgrading one of my friend's computers, and he plays alot of games. I'm wondering what would make the largest impact in gaming framerates: an upgrade to a better graphics card or a better processor/more ram.

specs:

AMD athlon 3200+ @ 2.4Ghz
512 pc2-5300 RAM
NVIDIA nx7300le w/ 256MB graphics ram
msi k9nu mobo
360gb sata hdd

That graphics card is pathetic. I used to have one. Ideally, upgrade them all (with the CPU to a dual core) but at least the Ram and graphics card.

A graphics card would have the biggest improvement on the FPS he is getting during games.

What's his budget, we'd be more than happy to help him get a better one! ;)

@morris14cc - the CPU is already o/c'd, the original (i think) was 2.0Ghz, he said that he almost has it to 2.8Ghz

@kornowski - he said to try to keep it under $150

i was thinking to get this graphics card and this RAM.

The only k9nu board I can get to come up from google with a quick check was the neo-v. That has support for DDR2-800, so if that is the same board I would go with the ram as it performs a bit better for very similar prices. 2Gb kits can also be had for $35, or even sub 30 if you look for those with rebates.

The video card is a very nice one. I have the eVGA version of it and it has been great for me. It won't be a Crysis killer, but will do well with most every other game.

$55 on newegg can get you a 3800+ X2 which overclock relatively well as well.

@kornowski - $150 for everything

@nightrain - i did a quick google search as well, and found no differences between the neo (which he has) and the neo-v...probably just some minor thing like a bug fix or something

$150 for RAM and graphics card, you may struggle to find something great, but I'm sure we'll be able to find something! ;)

Agreed. However, I doubt 512MB will give him much to play with. So $110... you have $40 left. Get the RAM I specified, and you should have a helluva better computer. Consider a processor upgrade very soon.
