Upgrade my CPU or GPU?

Ok, So i want my computer to be able to play games on a higher quality,
at the moment ive got a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro Graphics card and a AMD Phenom 9550 Quad-Core Proccesor and im experiencing visual lag when i run some games on a higher quality. Which would you recommend upgrading and what would you upgrade it to, on a budget.

what kind of a budget and what games (and at what settings)? also, what psu do you have? brand and wattage please...
 
It's definitely your GPU. try Nvidia's GTX 460. that should hold ya' for a while. It's one of Nvidia's best price/value cards available. but also make sure your PSU can handle it. you must have at least a reputable brand's PSU @ 500 watts for the GTX 460.
 
kk, im not sure what brand my psu is but is says 550watts max
can u give me an aprox price of the GTX 460?
a while back i was playing Resident Evil 5 with my cousin and i noticed that his gameplay etc was much smoother and nicer to look at, while myn was a little bit jerky and the rest.
I would say my budget would be around $200-250

ive overcloacked my cpu to 2348 originally is was 2000
and im willing to spend probably $300 max
 
According to Asus, your current motherboard support all latest CPU. What you need to is having a BIOS flash. However, Phenom 9550 is not bad. IMO, if you want to upgrade CPU, Phenom IIx4 955 would be the one. But you can leave it at this time

Video card - GTX 460 1GB/ 5830 1GB is a good choice. A 550W PSU should take it without major problem.

RAM - 2 x 2GB is good

So with $300, I recommend you either get
5830/GTX 460 + 4GB RAM
or Phenom IIx4 955 + 5770 1GB

Upgrading to 5830/ GTX 460 + RAM would probably do better on gaming
 
Ok, if you're looking for improvements in gaming, GPU will render you more improvements. Problem is, those Nvidia cards are overly power hungry. ATI is better than Nvidia at the moment, atleast for price/performance area. As for my choice in GPU card, go 5800 series, they're all good. BTW, the 965 OCs better than the 955, i read up on it myself. But CPUs are hit or miss as far as top performers go.
 
A GPU will always, for now, render you better upgrades in gaming than a CPU. So, as long as your CPU wont bottleneck too bad if at all, go gpu. ATI if better overall than Nvidia btw.
