If the newer cards are less power hungry then the 900 series cards then a 500 watt psu would be fine as the 980 requires anywhere from 500 to 520 watts depending on what site you look at. His original psu is a triple rail with 20 amps on each rail and with it being no name brand I don't think I would actually trust it with the higher cards.
