Upgrade Options

Hey I've been out of the hardware loop for a while now but I'm thinking about upgrading my desktop. Thought you more knowledgeable folk could let me know what kind of upgrade option I have. Don't really have a budget because I'm not really sure what I want to do yet, but the cheaper the better. I guess I'm looking for the most bang for my buck. Builds in my sig. Thanks!

Well what do you use it for? For gaming, you're best off getting a new video card. That CPU is pretty decent and you wouldn't see much of a performance increase even if you got the best you can for your 775 mobo, not enough to justify the price anyway.

Thanks for the responses. I do game quite a bit so I am looking to possibly upgrade my video card. In terms of motherboards, is it worth getting a new one? Can i grab one that will last me for 3+ years? Also I'm content with 4gigs of ram but if its cheap enough grabbing 6 or 8 wouldn't hurt either. Also do I need a new mother board if I want to pickup DDR3 memory? I know much less about motherboards then the other components so I don't have a clue what to look for.

Yes, you do need a new board if you want different kind of memory. IMO a new one wouldn't be worth it, because you'd basically have to get a new CPU and memory as well.

Get a good cooler and overclock your Q6700 some more. It's still a potent chip...no need to replace it yet.

A better graphics card would do wonders for your gaming, though.

Hey so I now have a budget of $500. I would like to upgrade my motherboard cpu, ram and possibly my gpu if possible. If you were upgrading, which parts would you purchase? I'll be ordering from amazon or newegg.

I'd wait a little bit for prices to stabilize and Sandy Bridge to get into the market properly. Prices and options will most likely look a lot better a month from now.

You budget not enough to get video card...

Probably LGA 1155 core i5 2500/ 2500K or core i7 2600/ 2600K

Or if you want to run SLi/ crossfire, get core i7 950.
