Upgrade or buy a new computer?

Hello,

I am trying to figure out if it's better for me to buy a new desktop or upgrade what I have.
I currently have a DELL DIMENSION 3000 Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHZ, 1 GB RAM - bought maybe 3 years ago or so.

My computer is really slow now - it got recently infected by a virus and had to reformat everything.

Now I don't know if I would be better off buying a new desktop (not DELL though as I have bought 3 of them in the last 5 years and I am not happy with them), or upgrade the one I have adding:

The new hd = $65
New memory = $60, total of 1.25gb
Ne Video card = = $65
labor = $80

(this is the estimate I got from my tech guy).

For $270 total I can basically upgrade my old computer and speed it up.

Any suggestions will be very appreciated.

I would buy/build new. Your won't last much longer with the P4. If you really want to upgrade, do it yourself, don't waste money on Labour, there are plenty of helpful guides on the internet. What socket is the CPU? 478/775? If 775 then It might be worth upgrading :)
 
My 2 cents -

Definitely start from scratch. Upgrading Dells is a complete nightmare, and rarely worth it. Most of their stuff is built specifically for Dell, therefore Dells own form factor, making it almost impossible.

If i were you, start again

I just upgraded an old laptop from Dell (new hard drive, RAM, modded the CPU) and spent about 150 on it. It was worth it. For 270, I would start fresh most likely.

If I decided to have a new one built for me (I guess I could still use the DELL box) - how much do you think it's a reasonable price to spend?
I basically need the computer mostly to surf the internet and to do some graphic work with Photoshop.
