Upgrade or SLI?

Hey,

I currently have a 7600GS, but for the games I'm playing now it's starting to lag up and slow down the system. I like playing with high graphics on full screen, but now I start running half-screen windowed :( (17" monitor)

Anyway, I really don't want to spend any more than 60-70 pounds..

The question I'm asking is, is it worth getting another 7600GS for SLI? My friend is also selling a 7600GT - would this work in SLI with the 7600GS? Or is it better to just get a new card?

System is an ASUS A8N SLI-SE, 2gb RAM, AMD 3800+ X2 (stock, no overclock)

if you want to upgrade i would go at least with 320mb 8800gts, how much is that in pounds, i dont think the gs and gt can mix : (
 
Really depends on which games you are playing, and for future proof for games in the future.

SLI has been proven to very slightly improve performance.

SLI is greatly useful for a large resolution monitor at high graphics effects with games etc, you get a very small increase by upgrading to sli with a 17" inch monitor displaying 1280x768 or 1024x768 resolution.

I would recommend getting a new card, maybe a 8600GT or higher.
 
Having two 7600GS in SLi is pretty decent. If you look at my specs it is what i am running. I only got two of them because i got them for 40$ each...so price per performance was pretty damn good.

My 3dMark06 score went from 2500 to almost 4800 before I overclocked my cpu. I was surprised how much the second 7600 added to my score. But those are just benchmarks.

I used to have a 15" lcd. Every game I had that supported SLI I could run on High/Max settings, just without AA and AF...which i never noticed a difference between them on anyways. Oblivion ran medium settings just great. Havent tested on my new monitor.

Now I have a 22" lcd and They still run games great. No difference on Doom3 really, just cant run it on Ultra. Fear runs with all settings up except soft shadows and AA AF. I never tried turning on soft shadows because when I tried them when I had the demo I just didnt like the way it looked. Just personal preference i suppose. Fear runs pretty well. In big battles i can notice it slow down a little bit to be honest, but nothing thats like slow motion or anything. Just a feeling of things slowing down just a tad.




On a 17" monitor i think you would be happy with the performance of them. But If you game a lot, or want to game dx10...either current or potential new games, then I would go with either an 8800gts 320mb, or a 8600gts.

The 8800gts is a great card. The 8600gts seems to get about what two 7600gs' get in 3dmark06, so about 5000 depending on your other parts, where as the 8800 should see around 8000.

If you can find a 7600 for around 50 bucks, Id say it would be worth it, assuming you play games supporting sli. If not, i would save up and get an 8800gts 320mb. Thats what im going for next.

If your like me and make a little step and then go big anyway right after, then you should just splurge and get the 8800.

Just .02c coming from someone with 2x7600gs. they are great, but now that ive upgraded to a much bigger monitor i want more.

A 7600GS and a 7600GT will not work in SLI. If you can get another 7600GS dirt cheap go for it. In SLI you will see quite a bit of performance gain in some games and none at all in some, so its kinda of a 50/50 thing. With a limited amount of money you could go for a X1950 Pro or if you want DirectX10 go for something like a 8600GTS
 
Yeah think it's the best option, i think u'll get more performance with a 8600gts than 2x7600gs, but this is my personal opinion. Plus u,ll get a decent dx10 gfx card for later.

However for games that dont support sli you can force it to in NVIDIA control panel - got me an extra 100 fps in CSS
 
Alright, got it.

Well, as you can probably tell, I know next to nothing about what makes a good graphics card, so can someone suggest a good one for my mobo, for less than 80 pounds?

I'm from the UK and I tend to use ebuyer.com a lot, if that helps :D
 
i got 7600gt and its gonna start doing a marathon to the bin after i get a 8800gts for crimbo but i would sack the 7600gs sli idea and start moving on because those cards wont improve better realism like the 8 seris.
