upgrade problem...

Ok, a friend and I finished upgrading an HP OEM computer earlier today, and everything went OK... for the most part. We put in a new motherboard, processor, RAM, and a PCI card with and IDE port on it. The wires that connect to the motherboard from the power button, didn't have the correct pin setup (for like HDD LED, power LED) but we fixed that by using some wire from another computer, so that's fine.

The problem is that when it was booting we got an error. (after turning off the "reboot after crash" setting, which kept it in a reboot loop) it was error 0x0000007B and had some other codes in parentheses, of which i don't remember. at first we thought it was the power supply in it, so we switched that out. (from a 430 watt Mad Dog to a 500 watt Thermaltake) didn't do anything. now we're thinking it's the hard drives. but we haven't tried anything on that front yet...we're pretty sure all the cabling is fine.

does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be causing this?
 
You have a different motherboard and you are using the same hard drive with the old version of windows installed on it, which you can't do without these kind of problems. You will have to either do a fresh install or a repair install because you have all new hardware on the different motherboard.
 
i was wondering if we would have to do a repair of Windows...and that won't erase any data right?
 
In doing a repair there is always a chance you will lose data, but you shouldn't. However, the problem you have now would be activating windows because it's in a totally new system with new hardware and windows will complain about it. You will have to call microsoft to get it reactivated.
