Upgrade question

I want to upgrade my system with a new cpu and motherboard. I only need this to last 9-12 months then I will do a major upgrade with a lot more funds .
At most I have is $200, so is it wise to just get the best cpu that my motherboard can handle being it's the retired 754 socket or can I get a combo. cpu and mobo. within this price range?
I want to still be able to use my DDR memory and AGP graphics card, so I can't grab anything that only uses DDR2 and PCIe, any thoughts?
Also, I do amateur graphics design and video editing. My specs. are with my signature. Thanks.

Your processor would be basically equal to that one.

I would recommend you holding out and waiting for a while before you upgrade, and then use the extra you have now for later. The highest processor you can get for the Socket 754 is just the 3700+, which is an upgrade, but not necessarily, from your current one. Switching motherboards/sockets to Socket 939 would make it so you have to upgrade your videocard to PCI-E, and that would take more out of your $200 as well.

not exactly true: i'm running a socket 939 with an agp card. am2 you will need a pci-e card.

O.K. I got an unexpected $100.00 check from my union making the total I have now $300.00 (yes and that is final).
So, this should give me more options. I'm doing a lot of Photoshop stuff and it's slow going right now when I have several windows open at the same time.
What should I get?

1. upgrade your motherboard/cpu to socket 939 (an X2 processor)
2. If you can, buy a 7600GS or so (or buy my X800"XT" :D)
