upgrade RAM from 2 X 2GB

Hello fellas, simple question here. I have Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5 motherboard:

http://ca.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3755#sp

The RAM I currently have is G.Skill F3-12800CL6-2GBPI

The speed is 667 MHz (DDR3 1333)

According to Gigabyte my mobo supports "Support for DDR3 2000(OC)/1333/1066 MHz memory modules"

I am not sure if I can buy DDR3 2000. My guess is the higher the number, the faster the RAM, right? I figure since RAM is so cheap nowadays, I might as well do an upgrade BUT there are so many options there.

I currently have 2GB X 2GB. I hear 8GB would give a significant boost on apps and some gaming, such as fixing lags. 16GB I hear is OVERKILL. Now should I just get another set of 2X2 or one 8GB stick or two 4GB sticks?

Thanks in advance guys.

8 GB is always nice to have but even 4GB is rarely used to the max, you may see a performance boost in a few games and stuff but probably not app wise, unless you have loads open at once, still ddr3 is soo cheap right now doesnt really matter and applications/games will continue to use more and more.

Unless I am reading it wrong you ram is pc3-12800, which means your ram is underclocked , you need to go into the bios and set it to 1600 Mhz, pc12800 is 1600Mhz ram not 1333Mhz.

The board is only using the memory at 1333mhz. You have to go into the bios and manually enter the timings and voltage to get it to the correct speed.

Thanks John, your name sounds familiar and you have helped me tremendously before. Just a noob question, what timings and voltage do I enter? and where in BIOS do I do this? Thanks a lot!!!!!!!

couldnt he add 4x2 and get 12 gigs? as long as the modules are same speed? tho it wont run in dual channel...i suppose?

Can you link to the actual memory on a website? Your timings are all off. If you have cl 6 memory then they need to be changed manually. I just can't find the model number you listed on the web anymore.

Your memory timings should be set to 6-8-6-24 at 1.6 volts. You will need to manually change these entries in the ram configuration page.

As far as RAM speed goes, it depends on which CPU you run. Phenom II default speed is 1333 MHz. but Deneb CPUs will usually run 1600 MHz. without issue. Thurban's will often run 1800+ MHz. FX CPUs run 1866 MHz. by default and over 2200 for many people. You must manually set these faster than default RAM speeds in the BIOS however. Your PC will not automatically boot to a higher than OE RAM frequency until you set it properly in the BIOS.
