Upgrade RAM

I recently purchased an HP pavillion DV6408nr laptop. It came with 1gb ram and I was looking to upgrade my system. On the box it states that the RAM is upgradable to 2gb. The memory is DDR2 PC2-5300 (2 DIMM). I was wondering what type of memory to purchase, I saw PC2 5300 DDR2 but non of the memory I found stated that it was 2 DIMM. Also, would it be possible to remove the original memory and replace it with a larger piece and in effect make the system able to handle more then 2gb of RAM?

I don't think that placing larger piece will work. And why don't you just put another stick of identical RAM and run them in dual channel.Because 2 gig of RAM is sufficient for current games.

OK thanks, I still have a few more questions though, one is How do I run the memory in dual channel, and would that mean that I should replace the 1gb that is already in my computer to have that run in dual channel also? One more thing what does the 2 DIMM mean, because when I've searched for memory on places like tigerdirect I don't see a listing for 2 DIMM?

Not for sure what you mean by 2 DIMM but your computer uses DDR2, it might be that it has 2 memory slots. If you have one 1gb stick now you need to get another 1gb stick to run Dual Channel. Install one of these and see what brand and model of memory you have and get another one the same brand and model or as close as you can at the speed, voltage and timing, they have to be close to run in Dual channel

DIMM stands for "Dual In Line Memory Module." It refers to sockets that take Random Access Memory chips.

Edit: I also thought you had to buy a dual channel memory kit in order to run Random Access Memory in dual channel. I have run my Memory in dual and single channel mode and I have not noticed any difference in speed. From what I have read, dual channel memory only runs about 10% faster than single channel memory.

I am whining here. Double Data Rate memory is so expensive compared to Double Data Rate 2 memory! If only I had went with a different motherboard! I am not highly impressed with Foxconn motherboards either.

One other thing to add.

Be sure you buy PC2-5300 200-Pin DDR2 memory as that is what your computer takes according to www.crucial.com. If you buy what is in bold, you will be okay unless you motherboard is picky about combining different brands of Random Access Memory like mine.

Thanks for all the help. I opened up my computer and looked at the memory, and found that it only has 2 memory slots (which both contain 512 mb of memory). So, I guess hermeslyre was right. In order for me to upgrade to 2 gb of memory I need to buy 2 x 1gb memory
Thanks again for all the help
