upgrade suggestions?

Okay.... I have received an old Compaq Presario 5000. It has a socket A 750Mhz Duron CPU. The mobo jumpers only support 100(200) and 133(266)mhz FSB speeds. Newegg showed these 2 CPUs.
I could either get:
AMD Duron Applebred 1.8Ghz for $49 or
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Barton 2.083Ghz for $113
Is the Athlon really worth paying twice as much for? I am not looking to turn this into a gaming machine but my brother wil be playing mediocre games that might stress the hardware a little bit. The game he wants right now is called Trackmania Sunrise, it is not really intensive with the options turned off.

Also, I need a recommendation for a decent AGP 2x/4x graphics card for ~$50. I was thinking of getting an FX5200 since my previous one from my other PC was a pretty good card for a while. Is there anything better for around the price?

Lastly I need a PSU that supports miniATX cases since the one in there now is 8A:eek: on the 12v rail. Any suggestions? Anything above 12A will probably hold this thing over for a while.

I didn't think it would support the XP 2800 but not even the applebred? When I said 100/133 mhz it meant the FSB is 200 and 266, the applebred is 266FSB. I've heard of Presario 5000s of the same model with a duron 900 i think.
Also, is the FX5200 decent or is there a better AGP card?

Personally I wouldn't bother with the Compaq.....sell it. Then look for something ebay like the used AMD system I have for sell (see signature). You could pick up a PC like this for very little $$$ and have a much better system than that compaq. Just my $.02

You really don't think it will support the Duron Applebred? It does support up to 266Mhz FSB. Since this is pretty much a lost cause, I want to spend the least amount money possible and get as much performance as possible. I really need help on this.
Maybe I should just get an emachines or search around newegg's selection of PCs....I don't really trust or use ebay.

Can anyone suggest maybe a cheap barebone?

The applebreds use a different core revision that the compaq's board prob. will not support, I don't know how to explain it better than that, but I had a PCChips 810LMR board with Duron 950, I have read forum postings on my board and it doisn't support applebreds so I don't think yours will either. Don't get an emachine, they have no AGP slot and are absolute crap (based on my experience with the emachines in my school). Get something like a s478 sys and bolt it into the compaq 5000 case b/c the case is cool. This is a good cheap config (find the parts used)
Asus P4B533-VM mATX board
Pentium 4 2GHz
256MB PC2100 (iirc that is what the P4B533-VM supports)
20GB HD

Okay, good idea. I don't know much about Intel system configs so I think I'll just replace the mobo with a socket A mobo instead, I am more comfortable with AMD systems. I will consider the Pentium if it is cheaper though. Thanks :D

One last thing!! Do you think the Presario 5000 case is MiniATX? It might be the old Baby AT type...

1. AthlonXP (not Athlon)
2. Yes the AthlonXP is a significantly superior chip (by orders of magnitude here) but it wont be running at fullspeed due to limitations of the motherboard but rather it'll be running 1.67GHz which is roughly the speed of the AthlonXP2000 :)

You can try the Atrix Colors-IT 200W [12V@18A, $20] although i wouldnt place too much faith i the ratings (for no particular reason, just a 'feel')
