Ok ill try this again heh

Was looking to build a new computer but money is a bit tight . I love gaming and first person shooters as well as watching movies on my comp . My present comp is down due to viruses but i have a friend at work checking it out for me. so far everything appears ok. I have a IC7-G Max 2 motherboard and it supports 875p chip. It currently has a 2.4 800 fsb in it. I found a 3.4 800 fsb for $ 190 dollars. here are links to the motherboard i have and the processor that i am considering.
motherboard:

Chip :

I am figuring that if i upgrade the cpu to the one i linked and get a new vid card and some new ram ( the motherboard i believe can have up to 4 GB of DDR 400) my computer will hold me over until i have the cash for a new build.
any suggestions on 4gb of ram for a decent price? also need help finding a vid card compatable with the motherboard. If anyone can help me pls track down the ram and vid card upgrades and prices it would be greatly appreciated. So fat its 190 for the chip... then whatever the ram and vid card will run me . hopefully i can get it all fer 700 or so max . once again thx for any help .
Rob
sidenote i believe the computer has 1gb of ocz 3700... cant remember and the damn thing is at work atm

I would just keep my current computer and save right now. That set-up it kinda of pricy and also, nobody uses 4 gig of ram. (common people that play all the lastest games I mean) The most anybody usually uses is 2 gig but 1 is plenty in my book.

Heh problem is im currently reduced to using my laptop which is a piece of crap. Im still looking into the processor i think i can get one like i linked for 100 or so. if i follow your advice about the ram maybe my current ram is ok. the current vid card is i believe a radeon 9800 128 or somthin like that . my roomate has a 256 radeon . if i put the 256 card and get a cpu fer 100 dollars or so that soune feesible?
bleh spellcheck
thx Rob

Tap..Tap... is this thing on?

ok whats the diference between a 3.4 with L2 cache 512 and a 3.0 with L2 cache 1 mb
3.0

3.4
http://shopper.cnet.com/Intel_Pentium_4_3_4_GHz_processor/4014-3086_9-30907582.html?tag=pdtl-list

Well the difference is that one has got twice the amount of cache and the other is 400Mhz faster. This chip is on sale this weekend, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116175

Ah ok . What one would be better for gaming?
While looking up some 3.0 i am seeing 3.0 3.0e 3.0c ( think i saw a c )
any idea on the differences?
Thanx
Rob

I think that the letters indicate the different stepping of the CPU's. I think that the one I recommended in my post above would be about the best you can get if you cant afford a new build.

When I first made my present computer I had overclocking in mind but kinda chickened out. My present chip is a 2.4 800 fsb and I chose it because I remember reading somewhere that it was a good overclocker. Maybe I should look into overclocking my present chip? Or maybe the 3.0 that you linked has a good overclockability also? Thx

The one I suggested is also a great overclocker because of it's E0 stepping.

Ok so the E stepping (whatever that is ) makes for better overclocking? I am trying to find a retail box version but keep coming up empty. thx for your help so far monkey

heh i looked at the 4th one and as i scrolled down to see all options part of the damn thing is out of stock. Thanx . Now i have a new cpu and choice of cooling. I just need to work on some ram and a vid card. My roomate has a radeon 256 mb that is i believe compatible that i can have. My motherboard is good for up to 4 gb of ram but i believe someone earlier said that 2 is sufficient.thx again im off to look up ram now.
Rob

Heh just saw now that while i was typin a reply you had already replied to my previous post. Ok that being the case when i search i will try and find say 1 gig or 2 but want to get a real nice ram that will use the utmost the board is capable of.
