Upgrade

I'm seriously thinking of upgrading my hardware - GPU, CPU, Mobo.

GeCube Radeon 9600XT---- UPGRADE TO---- XFX GeForce 7600GT
AMD Athlon XP 2600+ ---- UPGRADE TO---- AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
Asus A7N8X-X ---- UPGRADE TO---- ?

Although my choices for possible upgrades aren't the latest/fastest out there but would it be a good performance jump from what I have now?

GeCude to EVGA would be better for the video card portion. You'll love going from the old Atholon to a 4200+ X2 dusl core cpu. From Asus to Asus! Or if you want a switch Gigabyte or MSI.

Thanks! The prices on Newegg look really good. I hope they ship to Australia. One more question regarding the 4200+, the one I looked at has (65w) what does it mean?

I'm afraid that newegg don't ship to Australia. www.staticice.com.au is a great site for searching for the best prices on components in Australia, and I've found www.msy.com.au to be one of the cheapest vendors.

65W is the Thermal Design Power (TDP) of the CPU. Basically it means it's rated to consume up to 65W of power, and will obviously draw less power (and produce less heat) than the regular 89W models.

You should find the new system to be a big upgrade. Keep in mind that if you're looking at a socket AM2 based system, as I assume you are, you'll need to switch your RAM as well.

Just being a 4200+ on a Socket 939 board is going to see a big difference fast! I ran the XP2600+ followed by a 3000+ and 3200+ on the old build. Just going from 1.8ghz to the 2.21ghz on a Socket A saw that. Now comtemplate a dual core model on top of this?

(well atl least the Opteron 185 is starting to come down in price a little. The FX-60 hasn't been seen in awhile. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103002 )

Thanks for the site advice, yeah I knew I'd have to switch RAM, I just bought a gig of DDR400 but oh well I spose I can put it on eBay or something along with my other old gear when the time comes.

You will want to jump at the lower prices seen on AM2 boards as low as 939 models at this point. I'm still waiting for prices on either the FX-60 or Opteron 185 to come down for the present case. But by that time the AMD Quad core models will look more inviting. One of those would max the board besides another 2gb of memory but...? Why not then build another one?

You know since you are upgrading your motherboard and CPU and all, why not get a Core 2 Duo? They are way better than what AMD can offer at the moment.

That doesnt make sense at all. Both the eVGA and XFX 7600GT perform exactly the same, and there are different model Asus motherboards you know.

I agree, if your buying a new motherboard and processor, why not go with a Core 2 Duo?

I am well aware of Asus boards and what models are available. The other brands are mentioned as alternatives rather then someone going into some low end make. EVGA is a better make then XFX commonly seen in retail department stores like Walmart, Target, maybe in Staples or Office Max as well. Despite what the specs say the brand is better. An MSI or Asus card will also surpass XFX.

I would like to know where you came up with this crap! Other than thats what you just think and posting it as fact!

eVGA is whats commonly found in stores. XFX is a fantastic brand, so is eVGA, MSI, etc. XFX are more common among hard core gamers, since alot of their cards have better coolers and/or clocked a bit higher.

Apparently you haven't shopped around enough to see what different retail stores carry. :P But I would easily give MSI the edge over either of the other two on the models they carry.

I've seen many eVGA as well as a few BFG and XFX cards at Bestbuy and Circuit City. But just because XFX may be in alot of your retail stores, doesnt mean it's a bad brand. It's one of the best manufacturers out there.

You can even find ATI brand cards as well as NVidia own name being sold. BFG is certainly another good make to go with. The complaints most often on any of these however has been with XFX. I rarely hear any on eVGA or BFG while some may have problems seen that have other causes while running one of those brands. For cards iwith ATI chips the HIS brands hears the most there.

Aren't the core 2 duo's more expensive? Thats why I chose AMD. I'm limited by the almighty dollar. I can get a 4200+ for Aus$136 (probably about US$110). Are the C2D's that price??

I've just looked into the Intel processors a bit more. The C2D's are nearly a hundred bucks more than the AMD I'm lookin at. BUT, the D820/D915-low voltage are both AU$125 and the D925 is $171, the D935 is $180 and the D945 is $237. The currency exchange is about 80c american to a dollar Australian. Is the D series better than the AMD's?

I REALLY appreciate everyone's advice and opinions on what brand GPU to get but no need to get agitated with each other just cuz you have differing opinions of brands.

haha, nVidia doesnt produce their own cards for consumers :P Only ATI does.
