upgraded memory in laptop, but the usable memory is not changing

Hi,

I just bought a Dell e6410 laptop. It has Windows 7 Professional 32 bit.

I upgraded the memory from 4GB to 8GB but the issue is that after upgrading the total memory it is showing 8GB, but the usable memory has not changed. It is still at 3.7GB.

Is this some bug with Windows 7? Why isn't the system upping the usable memory even though the system has a total of 8GB?

You need a 64 bit operating system to take advantage of amounts of memory over the limitations of a 32 bit OS. It might be installed, but your current OS can't use it.

There's a Windows 7 Compatibility Center where you can search on the name of your software or hardware for compatibility, download the Upgrade Advisor (which scans your machine for compatibility issues), or find updated drivers that address compatibility issues. The site is at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx.

@russ88765: You are correct that Windows 7 Professional 64-bit will certainly handle the extra RAM more effectively. However, the terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor, handles information. The 32-bit still can see the RAM installed.

It can see it all day, but but if it doesn't address it, what's the point?
