Upgraded RAM but much lost!

I had 2 x 1gb RAM in my desktop and decided to get an additional 2 x 2gb (KVR800D2N6/2G) which I installed yesterday. I notice under 'system info' it shows the full 6gb but says that only 3.37gb is available. Is this to be expected?

Must admit that I'm not sure what make/speed the original memory was but they were installed in the yellow slots whilst my new modules are in the black slots - so I guess that's dual channel?

Is there a simple answer as to why only 3.37gb is available when I was expecting around 5gb and would it help matters to get another two sticks of the KVR memory to replace the original 2 sticks?? Sorry if all this is a bit naive!! Many thanks :confused:
 
Enable Memory Remapping in your BIOS is you have it and update windows.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS and if you have a discrete GPU then turn off any onboard GPU.
 
I'm a bit confused by all this - my OS is Win8.1 pro which I thought was a 64bit os; my mobo is Asus M3N78-VM which apparently can run 32bit and 64 bit simultaneouslybut my system info says it's a 32bit system, x64 based processor.

Have I bought the wrong RAM sticks?:confused:
 
Only had the one disc so would that cater for 32 and 64 bit and would I have been asked which one it should install - I honestly can't remember!!
 
Many thanks. I'm just wondering now whether I cxan install the 64bit version over the 32 bit one and still have all my software working or do I have to start from scratch again and re-load everything??

Does the user notice any real difference between the 32 and 64 bit versions and if so what are the main differences please?:o

The maximum amount of useable memory is the main difference, however 64-bit applications today run much better as opposed to their 32-bit counter parts. It took years for 64-bit to actually catch on, which was quite sad. We have had 64 bit since like 2000 yet it didnt become useful on the consumer level until a few years ago.
 
Sounds a good improvement to me then. I'll be interested to see the difference when I do some video editing - should be vast improvement (I hope!!!)
