Upgraded RAM- seems slow

I had all 4 of the slots on my motherboard full with 512MB modules. i decided to upgrade this. so i went to the store and bought Crucial Ballistix RAM. It was a pack of 2, so it came with two 2GB modules. I put them in and the computer seemed to actually be a little bit slower. I was running 32 bit XP. I just installed 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate and it still doesn't seem all that fast. I have 2 of the slots filled with the 2GB Ballistix RAM and the other 2 slots have 2 512MB modules in them. So I have 5 gigs installed. I ran the Windows Experience Index thing and it gave my memory a rating of 4.1. Why would it be this low? By the way, this is a Dell Dimension XPS Gen. 5.

CPU- Intel Pentium D 3.00 GHz, 2999 Mhz, 2 cores, 2 logical processors
The 2 512MB modules are the ones that came with the computer.

I did something very similar, but the other way around and experienced the same problem.

I had 4GB Crucial Ballistix RAM (2x2GB) and decided to install another 2GB (2x1GB) in the 2 remaining slots and booted up. General tasks seemed slightly less responsive and everything seemed a bit sluggish so I removed the 2x1GB modules and it's not running much better.

I would try taking out the other modules and leaving the Crucial Ballistix in there. Only really intensive programs use over 4GB of RAM anyway, 4GB is plenty for a general user playing high-end games.

Thanks for your reply. I actually got it to run dual channel now so it's a little better now. I think what I need is a new CPU lol. I have a Pentium D 830. Does that seem ancient to you guys here?

It's old but not ancient and as long as it performs well for you then there is no need to upgrade.
