upgraded the computer, now its fried

I recently upgraded my PSU but didnt I wasnt paying attention and connected the floppy connector to my motherboard. I didnt realize this till after it happend.. I started the computer and it popped and sizzled. Smoke started to come out of the CPU area. I realized that I had too much voltage going to the motherboard b/c of the floppy connector that i connected to the 'system fan' on the motherboard.. yea stupid me.

i pulled off the heatsink to the CPU and the CPU was pretty much welded on to the heatsink. is the CPU bad now? is my motherboard or ram or video card bad now too? i have no way of checking b/c i dont have another computer to plug anything into and this laptop simply wont work with those components. HELP!!
 
Wow... I'm quite surprised the voltage even got to your CPU. I figured something else would have blown before it got that far. Well, inspect the CPU. If there's any visible damage, I'd say it's trash. GPU... eh... Normally I'd say it's good, but given the CPU was apparently fried, you don't know how far that voltage traveled. Give it a good inspection, maybe even pulling off the heatsink and confirming nothing's burnt before even trying it again.
 
I'd say pull ur graphics card out and ram and check the gold plating for any burns, its possible they weren't effected by the shock. as for the cpu i agree with ^. that connector on the motherboard is most likely gone if not the whole board, since its suppose to takes power from the board not vice versa.
 
well the CPU has no visible damage and neither do the graphics card or ram. Nothing smells burnt either other than the motherboard. I didnt know if the mobo had a overvoltage failsafe that would protect other parts of the computer. Here is a quick look at my stats:

Athlon Phenom 1055t
Gigabyte 890GP
8GB Kingston DDR3-1333
Radeon HD 5670
HEC x-power pro 650W


So if its just the motherboard, im contemplating on getting a Gigabyte 890FX or one of the ASUS boards.
 
First of all, you should check what is fried and what is not. Take out various compontents like RAM, GPU etc.

yea I did all that. none of it looks or smells fried. the only thing is i can still smell it off the mobo but i dont see it. i havent taken out the mobo yet, but it no longer boots. Maybe the backside will show visible signs of damage? will have to see. just wanted to get more opinions on the matter
 
If you plugged a floppy drive power connector into a Fan header and saw smoke coming out from around the CPU area, I would say the board is toast.

well i think the PSU is toast as well. i installed the old PSU and it started up but nothing shows up on the monitor. i have it connected to the onboard video. the CPU fan isnt spinning as fast as it usually does either
 
i also changed out the video card with my older one and my monitor is receiving a signal from it. none of dvd drives are responding though. and there are no beeps or anything
 
My first build lost a PSU, blew the GPU and MOBO.

Can you return or RMA all your parts?

I bet your PSU and MOBO are bad, maybe more. Sorry to hear it.

you can RMA a mobo if its your own fault?? i know the instructions werent clear.. and the PSU had like nothing. i've built computers before but the last time i did was back when PIII's were still around...
