Upgraded.....

Its not really that I mind buying a new case, just that my whole point of sticking with this old system is to see if I can milk the life out of an old Dell and learn in the process. Buying all these new parts are just about making it a new computer all together.

This is more of a project to me than buying a serious new computer. I'm just trying to push my luck with it, and I don't mind doing things that are a little bit unorthodox to make it work. I just want to make this thing play COD2 and Swat 4 decently at DirectX9 if possible. I will buy a whole new comp at the end of 2006 regardless of whether I buy a new case now or not.

But so you don't think it would fit into my mobo? Then I would need a new one regardless right? Are there any alternative cooling options I could use on my CPU?

If all that becomes too complicated I will just keep my 1.8ghz and buy a new shitty Dell fan and let it die.

I honestly have no idea. I think it might be best to get the Dell fan and just let it die. But now that I look back at your original problem, it might help to get rid of that shroud, put a new Dell fan on the CPU, and stick some case fans in to keep it cool

I think I will do that then. Is there a way I could get a dell equivelent fan at CompUSA or somewhere else locally? I really don't want to wait for the part to arrive. I would go get it later today if possible.

Where do you live? There might be a Dell reseller or something....or if you live near me just bring your pc over and I'll look at it :D But as to compatibility, OEM manufacturers make their own parts. Look at the configuration very closely. If it is just a regular 80mm fan screwed onto the heatsink, then you should be able to do a hack-job type configuration relatively easily. But if it is some Dell crap job, then you need to get a Dell product. You might also want to find some way to mount some more fans in the case.

The fan measures 92 mm wide, and 32 mm deep.
Is it just screwed onto the heatsink? Or is it some elaborate crap thing? Because you may be able to just use something like this. Or you could check CompUSA, but I really don't know if they have anything. Could you post a pic of the heatsink/fan that you have right now?

Ill try and get a pic of the setup for you. Thanks for all the help so far Bobo, you'v helped me a ton through this.

That fan at the link you posted looks just like the one I have now, and I can use the shroud for a different fan I have just found out. The fan just clips right out of the shroud.

I'm going to take a break for a little bit and think about it. Ill get a picture up of the setup in a couple hours or so. I may just try my luck and go into compUSA and find a 92mm fan and hope for the best.

Again,

Thanks for all the help.

You are quite welcome, that is what I am here for :)

Oh, I see, the fan is actually on the shroud. That should make it a bit easier for you.

good luck. I would check at compusa.com, but the site doesn't seem to be working.

edit: the site is back up now, here is what you want.

OK, bought that fan you showed at CompUSA. It wouldn't connect properly to my motherboard with its existing slot, so I stripped the wires on my old fan and connected the old connector to my new fans wiring.

Works perfectly. The fan is blowing nice and cool. My handyman skills make up for my lack of computer knowledge :). The computer is running like a dream so far. I will keep you all updated. Ill get some pics up and running. Now all I have to do is test COD 2 and see if it stays cool.

Now all I have to do is get more fans to keep the system even cooler.

Thanks for the help!

Good.

Thanks for the help!
anytime :)

COD2 runs perfect

I can pull 25-30 FPS average at

1024 x 768
4x anti-aliasing
trilinear filtering
Extra on all texture quality
no shadows
Medium Dynamic Lights
DirectX 9

If I pull down the filtering or anti-aliasing I can pull 40 fps average.

If I run it in Direct X7 with everything turned to its highest, I can pull 60-65 fps average.

:) Thanks guys

What happens if u goto 2X AF? :)

Trillinear filtering isnt gonna cost all that much, its the AA that guts you
