hi

i want to play final fantasy 14 mmo but i havnt got the cash for a new build, and i tried the benchmark program on my laptop and it crashed ha

http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/media/benchmark/na/

i have an old pc in my dads that i build about 9 years ago which was good at the time its..

intel pentium processor 3 - 3.6ghz
asus mother board (cant remeber which one)
nvidia geforce 128mg (not sure which model)
500g sata HDD
8g RAM 4x2 (DDR pc1300)

would i be able to by a good graphic card on the old APG socket as i dont think it has the newer PCI GPU slot

and would i be able to play game on lowish settings?

thanks

You're probably not gonna be able to play it sorry. :( For a start your CPU is not good enough, an i7 is recommended (though I seriously doubt you need an i7 to play it), you need 4GB of RAM (I've no idea how you've got 8GB of RAM on a board which only supports Pentium 3 processors and AGP cards, I reckon you've got 800MB) and a GTX 460 graphics card, which is not available for the AGP interface.

Here are the recommended requirements http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/media/recom/na/pc.html as you can see your system does not meet these.

If you buy older/second hand parts then you may get lucky, but £350 is not enough for a brand new gaming machine which will run that game.

would you recomend buying second hand parts though, from ebay or somewere?

also how much do you think i would need to buy a new gaming machine that could play that game at 60% graphic settings?

thank you

Something wrong with the spec. There was no Pentium III that ran at 3.6hz or supported 8gb. of memory.

i think it was 3.06 (plus i over clocked it higher) and as vistakid said prob 800mg ram

sorry its been a while since i built the comp, iv been looking at doing it again but i dont understand all this new kit like boot drives and cache card memory and liquid cooling, plus the gpus and cpus are confusing to tell which ones are the most powerfull

Depends if you get good stuff cheap. I recently picked an Sapphire Radeon 5870 for my system from eBay for £100 and it's working great and maxxing all my games out at 1080p, so yeah I'd say look around and see what you can pick up.

To build an entirely new gaming system I reckon you'd need to spend around £500-£600 minimum, maybe even up to £700 or £800 if you want to max this game out.

Yeah I picked up that too. I reckon he has 800MB of RAM, but not sure about the clockspeed of the P3. Doesn't matter anyway, that Pentium 3 is not enough to ply this game.

ok thanks guys, i found this site, am not going to buy from it just wanna know what pc from the page you think i would need to run this game, not at 100% say maybe 75%

http://www.arbico.co.uk/Gaming-PCs-p-1-c-.html

None of them look great. They all have very powerful processors, but weak graphics cards. Never a good combination. They probably use crappy power supplies and cases too.

Honestly, stay away from these and build something yourself. It may even be cheaper than some of these, but you can choose what goes in your system and make sure you are using quality components.

ok, i just wanted an idea or want components i would need, i dont know wear to start

do you know i good website that sells parts in uk at good prices?

if i spend £600 total how much would i spend on each part, round about?

MB £100
CPU £150
GPU £150
RAM £60
HDD £60
PSU £40
Case £40

would that be about right

Novatech is where I get all my stuff from, I live in Britain too! (Norwich) Dabs and Aria are also good.

I'd say you've got everything right there apart from maybe spend £100 on the CPU and get an i3 2120, then spend around £60 on your power supply and then whatever you can afford for your hard drive. You may go slightly over £600 but you shouldn't go much over.

I'll spec you a build later if you want?

OK here's what I think:

I've used that case in the past, it's OK but not great. For 20 quid it's good, but you may wanna spend a bit more and get something with some proper cable management features. I can upload some photos of the case with a build inside it if you want?

The power supply isn't very good, get this instead http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/cmpsu-600cxv2uk.html it's just £2 more and a better brand. :) 600W will be plenty.

The CPU is good.

The GPU is good.

The HDD looks decent.

Any old SATA DVD-RW will do, so no biggie about that.

The RAM. Don't buy that 12GB kit, it's intended for i7s which use triple-channel memory, the i3 uses dual-channel memory. Buy 8GB of G.Skill RipJaws-X instead http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/...dr3-pc3-12800/1600mhz/f3-12800cl9d-8gbxl.html or 8GB of that Corsair Vegenace RAM http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/memory-pc/ddr3-pc3-12800/1600mhz/cmz8gx3m2a1600c9.html I went for the RipJaws-X and love it. 8GB of RAM is plenty! That 12GB kit won't run in dual-channel or triple-channel, it'll only be running in single-channel with the i3 2120. You need either two or four DIMMs (they're just a fancy term for "sticks of RAM") to get dual-channel performance. The i3 does support triple-channel RAM configurations.

If you want 12GB, get an 8GB kit (2x4GB DIMMs) and a 4GB kit (2x2GB DIMMs), but I'd recommend saving the money and just sticking with 8GB.

The motherboard is good but it uses the Z68 chipset which is older. The Z77 chipset is newer and has some benefits such as native USB 3.0, so I'd get a Z77 board now http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/...el1155z77chipsetmotherboards/ga-z77x-d3h.html that's a good one, if you want a cheaper one this would be good http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/...el1155z77chipsetmotherboards/ga-z77-ds3h.html you want an ATX board such as the one I suggested, not an mATX board.

ok thanks alot, before i buy in a few months ill post to comfirm what am ordering

if i could get another £100 what would you upgrage the CPU or GPU?

also what is a boot drive and a cache memory card, do i need them?

ps: are you realy only 14 years old?
