Hi,
ive had my pc for about over a year and didnt buy it on the top of the line. I want to upgrade it to the best cpu and memory possible.
My computer is aacer aspire ast 180, i think there are different models so here are some extra numbers: ES320B.
Its am2 socket, but i dont know more about the motherboard.
I think this is the best cpu that it is compatible with?: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
It already has 2gigs of memory, there are four slots so im guessing i can add 2x1gig more!
I dont want to buy the wrong item.
Also will I need a better cooling fan for an upgraded cpu, the one I have right now is 3x3inches if that helps, I bought that as an upgrade!

That covers it, thanks.

Yeah, you might wanna think about just saving and upgrading mobo+cpu, the 6000+ is still pretty old tech and would easily be outperformed by an e5200, Phenom II Tri core, etc. For memory you would prolly be best by going with a 2x2 dual channel kit, as if you install two more 1gb modules then you will prolly lose dual channel. So something like this for memory: (very good price after rebate)

I would rather upgrade my pc by buying the best cpu it can handle.
Its a cheap way to make my pc better.
I found that the mother board is a MCP61M-AM
It has an am2 socket 940 pins, I would like to know what is the best cpu available for it at this time?

Also I have 4 banks of dual chaned support for memory, its better to have 4x1g than 2x1g right?

Well you can also ask the sales men on the store that you are going to buy to so that you won't have any problem about the compatibility

Hi, Ill probably buy the 6000+,
Will I need a new heat sink and fan though?
The fan I have now is 3x3 inches. The last thing I want is to overheat a new cpu.
If I do need a new fan could someone recommend the best one here for quality versus price?

Since im buying a new cpu I decided to go all the way and upgrade my pc enough to be able to play GTA4.

Ill want to play gta with a controller, im not very good with the key board when it comes to games. I would like to know if there are any controllers that resemble the ps3 controller and if i have the right port for it?
It seems there are usb adapters where I could fit a ps3 controller but I dont know if their compatible with Vista?

Thanks for the feedback so far!

Well, the 6000+ is hardly a brand spanking new processor, and since you have a pre-built machine, you're most likely running an intergrated GPU (or maybe a weak dedicated if you're lucky) with a fairly generic PSU. No offense intended, that's just how they tend to make them. To top it all off, GTA IV is one of the more resource heavy games out as of now, so despite your processor upgrade, I doubt you'll be able to get respectable settings out of it and your upgrade paths are limited. If you're interested in playing GTAIV, you're most likely going to have to start from scratch, sorry. On the other hand, there are oodles and zoodles of third party controllers out there that rip off the PS controller to the T. The Dualshock 3/Sixaxis also do work with Vista with a bit of playing around (Just a quick Google search) but I somehow doubt the game itself would support it, I've only ever used it for emulators and the like.

Hi,

Well if there are many controllers ripping of the ps3 controller than good for pc users, but wich one is compatible with pc games on vista?
About upgrading my pc to play GTA4, I will be able to meet the requirements, I dont understand what you said about GPU and PSU maybe you can explain more how that works? My current graphic card is an upgrade 512 asus en7600GS, thats the gpu right.

The AMD chip I want to buy is 3gigs and they ask for 2.4gigs for gta.

What I dont get is under requirements at the gta site it says: AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz
ANd under recommended it says: AMD Phenom X3 2.1Ghz
but that has less gigs???

yes ,clock speed is lower on a phenom but clock for clock a phenom at lower speed will kill athlon x2 plus a x3 has one more core :D my cpu set at 1.5ghz will kill a 3.0 ghz athlon x2 !! i mean beat the shit out of it !and then piss on it and laugh while eating dinner with its feet propped up on the couch lol muahhhhhhh

It looks like im being encouraged to change my motherboard and cpu all together however that means buying new memory, new heatsink and fan, possibly other components too (video card). That will come up to 400+.

I'm going with the amd am2 socket 6000+.

Actually, if you went am2+ you could use your current ddr2, the cpu comes with a fan, your current video card, prolly would need a better psu but then again your current one is only 250W. would be more like $250ish vs $400 but just throwin that out there;)

This is getting interesting! I Upgraded my fan already to 500w its an antec fan.
So to be sure my pci express 1.0, my dvd burner, my sata hard drive and my 9 in 1 card reader will fit an am2+ mother board? and a new cpu will come with a fan? what about cooling paste?

My motherboard right now is an Micro ATX, this is a mother board and processor I would like to buy:

It would be great to get a second opinion on weather it is compatible with my pc, the curent specs -my upgraded fan and -my upgraded video card are here:

I put this processor in a build for a friend not two weeks ago. Great for the price imo. The processor will come with both a fan/heatsink and thermal paste, if its the same as mine was, it'll come with pre-applied thermal paste so all you need to do is clamp it all down. The mother board should work without any issues, although some OEM cases can be somewhat finicky with other mobos. they don't like to let you customize them much. I'm assuming by upgrading your fan you mean you've upgraded your power supply? A 500w fan would be kinda scary lol. All your old components should work without a hitch too.

Ur pci-e gpu will work, your dvd burner will work, your hard drive will work, your power supply should be alright if you upgraded to a 500w antec, your card reader should work(as im assuming its usb), and the cpu has a stock heatsink with pre applied thermal paste. Just chiming in a suggestion here, but this memory+mobo would be better:

Hi, I still havent upgraded.
Is it true that most AMD processors, even the new am2+ and am3 can run on am2 socket boards?

My board is MCP61SM-AM and its a AM2 Socket.
