So I sold my mobo and ram (GA-770-UD3 + 6GB G.Skill ddr2800) to a buddy of mine along with a phenom x3 8650 that I had laying around that was used for about 6 months and I used the money to buy an am3 mobo and some ddr3 memory. Then my corsair H50 leaked:mad: (I've probably taken it out 7+ times cleaning/dusting the computer and one of the tubes split). So I bought a new cpu cooler and since I had to modify my case to fit the H50 I bought a new case so I didn't have one with big holes in it:P. It was getting kinda cramped in there anyways. I've got all that and I just ordered a new psu and a heatsink for the mosfets on the new mobo(78C @ idle :eek:). I'd love to hear some comments or suggestions/concerns. This is my first computer build and it's been an ongoing project. The next thing I get will probably be a better gfx card.:D

Looks pretty good so far. You probably could have gotten something better than the Zalman for the price, but it's still much better than stock.

edit: also, I'd have gone for G-Skill ripjaws instead of the plain stuff, considering they're about the same price.

Yeah, I noticed that too and I was kicking myself for it but I don't think they were the same price when I bought them.:( I've heard really good things about the zalman. What would you have recommended and why if you don't mind me asking?


Either there's something wrong with your mosfets or that's normal... I doubt anyone needs cooling on their mosfets.

Really? Does it matter if I plan on overclocking? It is normal for them to run that hot according to gigabyte. I like my stuff to run cool and for less than $20 it couldn't hurt.:P
 
I guess it's true that it couldn't hurt, but it looks like an eyesore to me, which is why I linked alternatives, like separate silver plated ones, etc... They should be okay with overclocking at those temps seeing as mine don't have a heatsink and I'm not having heat issues.

Well it does match the all copper zalman cpu cooler I have and copper dissipates heat better, but I can see how they could be an eyesore. Also, if you are using the mobo in your sig then you do have a heatsink on your mosfets that came on the board:

They may have been more expensive when you bought it...for a while the normal stuff was ~$100 and the Ripjaws was ~$115.

There was a time when that type of Zalman ruled the roost, but things have advanced since then.

For the price, I'd have grabbed this and a good fan.:

Oh crap, I do have heatsinks on the mosfets... I'm used to seeing intel mobos with the mosfets on the top.

Are they really that much better? I know copper dissipates heat better than aluminum and one would think that an all copper heatsink (base, heatpipes, and fins) would perform better than a similarly sized cooler that was copper base and heatpipes but with aluminum fins. This is assuming all other things were equal (case, mobo, cpu, fan size, and room temperatures).

The Tower 120 is slightly better than the Zalman, but the extent of it depends on the fan.

The Tower 120 Extreme, on the other hand, is currently the best air cooler on the market. In Frozencpu's tests, the 120 Extreme with the fan on low was roughly equal to that Zalman with the fan on full blast.

I'm not saying the Zalman is bad...it's really a great cooler. It's just that it's expensive compared to its performance competitors. And actually, you can even do better than the base 120 for the price:

Hmmm, interesting. I like the zalman, but I will definitely remember that next time.

I should have come here first. Had I of known I would've probably ordered 120 extreme instead since it isn't really all that much more expensive. Oh well, something else to kick myself about, haha:D
