Upgrading an i7 CPU

I was looking on ibuypower.com to customize my own build and i cant help but notice how expensive the CPUs are. I dont want to settle for the 920 i was thinking anywhere from a 940-975. BUt to upgrade from the 920 to the 965 its 700 dollars. If i were to just settle for the 920 and upgrade later from a cpu i buy off of ebay. How difficiult is it to upgrade? Is it as simple as taking out the cpu and replacing it and using the same heatsink?

thanks in advance.

First thing you should know is the i7 920 is way more CPU power then any body needs and there would be no reason to upgrade. No it is not as simple as removing the heat sink taking out the CPU placing in the new one and putting the heat sink back on. When you take the heat sink off you will have to reapply thermal past to the bottom or else your CPU will over heat also if you don't get an after market cooler the I wouldn't over clock the CPU. You also might need to update the bios before upgrading the CPU. The i9 is coming out soon probably in the next 1-2 months maybe you should wait for it.

Hey there,

The 940 is just an overclocked versoin on the 920 basically. You can easily outrun the 940 with a little overclocking on that 920 (Some go easily to 3.8GHZ).

The extreme editions (975) are as you say very expensive. Would you be capable of buying and making your own. We could help you do it and you would get bang for the buck and everything would be a lot better then which Ibuypower.

If you want us to build you one, tell us your budjet and a little on what your going to be doing with it (video editing, internet browsing, which games you play mostly.)

is the i9 going to be a 1366 socket? I guess i wouldnt be in a big hurry to upgrade either. Also are there any either website you might know of for custom builds?
thanks

Yes I think there will be a socket 1366 i9 the i9 will have 6 cores and 12 threads where the i7 only has 4 cores and 8 threads.

What he said - The 920 has plenty of speed and room to expand into. Love mine.

But there's a new Core i7 860 to come out around September for roughly $300 bucks. It's already selling in Taiwan right now. If you see the video - the 920 is selling for higher price in Taiwan - so the 860 ( based on i7 860 number being 920 - and the selling price marked below the 920 - I think the 920 is the best bang for the buck for the foreseeable future. Looks like the 860 is a scaled down version of the 920 - but I haven't seen any benchmarks yet. )

i7 860 is for LGA 1156 socket, it won't work with his motherboard

i7 860 has stock clock of 2.8GHz, 95w TDP and much better turbo boost than i7 920
So, it is better than i7 920 in some aspects. LGA 1156 processors won't support Triple channel memory though.

The i9 is still TBA?? I would hate to buy the i7 next month and the i9 drops the following month. I know they are going to drop the i7 price when the i9 comes out...

If you're bent on getting the i9, which I have no idea who would "need" it since the i7 920 is much more than most people need anyway, I would make sure to get a socket 1366 board.

The i9 will certainly not be slated to run on the 1156.

Nah, im bent on saving extra money on the i7 to add to my graphics card money lol. Im mos def getting the i7, just dont want to get it and the price drops a month later... Buuttt if its releasing Q1 of 2010, i guess $280 on the i7 it is, i cant wait that long for a price reduction.

If you're around a local microcenter - they've had a longstanding sale price for 199.00. Local pickup only though. I had to drive 30 min to get mine - but was worth the drive.
