Hey everyone,

This is my first time considering upgrading my current desktop. Right now my current pc is a Alienware Aurora (2010). I haven't played it in a few years. but now that i am it cant run much. The main game i am trying to play is Total War: Warhammer, among others. Attached is my current computer set up.

What i want to do us upgrade the MB and processer, HD, and RAM for starters. Until i can save up some more money to upgrade the other components as well.

Here is my current set up/ what i want to put in.

What I Have
Alienware Aurora Desktop
Dual ATI Radeon HD 5670
500GB - SATA-II 3Gb/s 7200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD
Overclocked Intel Core i7 930 QC (3.36GHz, 8MB Cache)
6GB Triple Channel 1333Mhz DDR 3
Cosmic Black, Alienware Aurora Chassis, 875W PSU
Alienware High-Performance Liquid Cooling

What I want to upgrade too
EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti Super Clocked Gaming ACX 2.0 6GB GDDR5 384bit X2
Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD
Intel Core i7-5930K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.5GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM
XFX ATX ProSeries Black Edition 1250 Power Supply (P11250BEFX) (unless stock is ok)
STOCK COOLING SYSTEM
STOCK

Bare with me, this is my first time changing computer parts on my own, let alone learning what each part do and comparability.

Greetings,

X2 as in, two 980 Ti in SLI ? You might as well go GTX 1080 for that cost.

How much do you have to work with currently? I'd probably upgrade the video card first since you'll see the most immediate benefits. If you upgraded the rest of the platform first and are still using the 5670 CF then you'll see around the same gaming performance anyway.

Ya i would eventually run 2 980;s but would buy 1 at a time. Would i need to run 2 GTX 1080's or would one be more than enough. I have about 700 to start with right now but could squeeze out a little more if needed.

Wait... you have $700 and you want to grab a 5930k and all the other hardware to make the thing boot?

Good luck.

A single 1080 gives you about the performance of 980 Ti SLI. It should be more than enough to run anything you have on max, but if you feel you'd benefit from dropping another $599 MSRP then have at it :p

Ya no, my mistake. I see my 700 pretty much would be the 5930k on its own. So that would have to be a later upgrade. I am pretty much trying to figure out what i can upgrade on it first to get the thing to run games at a decent level until i can save up enough for my "dream" computer.

So if bought the 1080 and kept everything else as is for now, would i be able to use the computer to game? If not what else would be needed to at least run games pretty decent?

I would just upgrade video card for right now. You would have to change motherboard too to be able to change processor as your current board doesn't support the new processor. However, if it played the game before then something has happened to your system.

It boots, and plays games it just doesnt play them well. Slow, jumpy, and just overall shit. Have to plat on low settings and even then it runs pretty rough.

It may be time for general cleanup of your system like running Ccleaner, check for malware, updating your video drivers.

The i7 930 isn't a slow processor if overclocked to around 3.8-4.0ghz. Not sure if your alienware would allow for it though.

But yes, you should grab a better video card first.

Ya i tried overclocking it best i could get was 3.3ghz. maybe i can push it more and im just not aware of how to do so. BTW i just ordered the 1080 so fingers crossed that will work until i can save up some more money to upgrade the rest.

It might just be limited by your Bios in your alienware. But typically, you'll want to up the BLK speed and bump up the voltage to meet 4.0 ghz. You'll also want to check to see if your cpu cooler is adequate for overclocking.

Right now the bios is A11, whatever that means. Ill do a little more research and see if i can increase it more.

Quick question: I just ordered the GTX 1080 but im thinking about canceling it so i can buy other stuff. Ive got a friend willing to sell me his GTX 950 2GB SCC for 100 bucks. Would that card work to get me at least gaming so i can buy other components? Eventually ill upgrade to the 1080 but in the meantime.

But it is not other component bottleneck your PC on gaming. It is the video cards.
I personally get high end GPU, grab second hand DDR3 RAM, and SSD.

Then wait until you got money to get new cpu, RAM and motherboard.
