Upgrading E6750

Hi guys,

I am on a budget of around £120 although I can stretch this, I'm looking to find a CPU + Mobo for within that approximate price range.

I will most likely be buying used from eBay UK, but haven't been in the hardware game since 2009, and have no idea what I should be looking at.

I don't have any preference of AMD or Intel, but I'd like something with good board availability.

I just need a rough idea of what to go for, this system will be used for gaming, and will be paired with a minimum 4GB of DDR3, I will also be overclocking.

I am not totally sure whether I want a Dual or a Quad, I know most games will benefit from a highly clocked dual core, but at the same time, I want to be able to play GTAIV and the like. Which I know originally struggled on dual cores.

Thanks!

So far what I've looked at are

Intel Core i3 550 (Dual)
AMD A6 3500 (Triple)
AMD Athlon II X4 - 631 (Quad)

All 32nm chips

Have you thought about a core 2 quad if your mobo is flashed to latest and able to run one?

Maybe a q9450 or eben a q8200 would do for gta iv if overclocked.

Yeah I actually used to have a Q6600, and then a Q6700, sold them a few years back though, and since got a really poor board.

I'm more interested in the newer platform's as it'll futureproof me for that little extra time, i'd be able to run DDR3, plus id be able to overclock some. :)

I think I'm about ready to leave Socket 775 :P

I would get the i3 if I were you. If you want to run a live socket though, you will need a 1155 chip and only the k versions overclock well.

Okay thanks!

I've seen the Clarkdale i3's on the 1156 Socket, which are cheaper.

I take it Nehalem was the sucessor to Clarkdale?

I haven't read up anything yet but I presume, it clarkdale was the dual core predecessor to wolfdale, nehalem topped clarkdale, and now we have Ivy bridge?

I do want something on the 32nm scale, but there's not really much point in changing from an 'Ancient' socket, to an already exstinct one :P

At the lest I think I'll go with a Sandy i3.

What is on offer from AMD?

I am so confused with all their different lines!

There's Athlon II X2 / X3 / X4
Phenom
Phenom II
FX Series
A Series

Could someone explain these to me?

Phenom 2 and FX in your situation. That said athlon 2 x4 arent too bad for gaming.

If you were going amd id go for phenom 2.
