Upgrading from Integrated

Just bought a new HP a1230n desktop and it came with intregrated ATI Xpress 200 graphics, basically they suck. I want to upgrade to some much better that allows me to play all the games available now with room for upcoming games in the future, basically something better than average that I won't have to replace for a couple years. I don't want to spend too much money, $300 is the absolute most, around $200 is preferred. Slot is a PCI Express x16.

Could you list the specifications of that desktop please.
Because I could suggest the best card out there, but theres no point with a mid range cpu, it will limit the card somewhat.

Get the 6800GS. Its only about $200 and has performance similar to the 6800GT. Its also a good overclocker.

I have no idea how to overclock. Also does brand play a major role in buying a graphics card? Or should I just look for one with good specs?

Well the 6800GS si still good regardless of overclocking.

Brand isn't that important, some are overclocked, some have different coolers, some better warentys. Other then that its pretty much the same. XFX curently has the best 6800GS so I would get that.

The x800GTO is also a great deal for $170, plays the newest games at highest settings. The 6800GS is a great deal to.

And brand name doesnt really matter, i usually go with the cheapest of a certain model unless it has bad ratings.

could you name like the top 5 models for under $250?

They are the companies that make the card, nVidia dont make and sell there cards, they sell them to other companies who then make it and sell it. Most cards you see at stores are made by other companies as well.

nvidia and ati just make the plans and blueprints and all that stuff and sell teh rights to other companies
