Upgrading from Pent D to Q6600

I have a dell e520 from '06 that originally came with a pentium D, I've been upgrading it, and now im at the processor, I thought the slot was all I had to look for, but now im afraid it may not support it, does anyone have any insight?

I'm going to guess no, it will not support it. Going from a D-series to a Quad is quite a leap. An early-gen C2D should work though. Maybe... an E4500 instead perhaps?

I eventually plan to game on it, but I am also preparing it for windows vista (which was running sluggish) and alot of multitasking which I do for school (multiple windows, compiling code, word documents, drawing circuits while playing/downloading/streaming music )

also, i went through with installing it, my POST says its not compatible with the board, but i hit F1 to continue and it runs fine and detects all 4 cores at once (and runs much smoother now) mt only thoughts are that it may not be running as fast as it can. Would that be the case?

Its possible that your board or your PSU may not have enough potential power to supply the cpu, and it is underclocked as a result, but your probably fine.
